Britney Spears is the best-selling female artist who debuted in the past 25 years. She shaped an entire generation with her debut album, however, did the pop icon ever manage to replicate that success? We’ll find out shortly!
It’s time to welcome the IFPI Global Top 10 Albums of 2018! It’s a good ol’ list, focusing on pure album sales. This atypical methodology leads to the most unique list ever by the IFPI since they debuted them in 2001 with soundtracks and foreign language releases all over the ranking!
If all albums are strongly anticipated by fans of its singer, the fourth album of Adele is eagerly awaited by virtually everybody, even more now that we know she is working on it. Many want to listen to her new music. The others are pending too this record because she is so popular that her career is part of our general culture and you don’t wanna to be the one who misses an obvious Trivial Pursuit question.
Many of you enjoy advanced analytics. Others love to follow closely their favorite artists. In both cases, you will adore this piece of data! Do you know when an artist reaches his peak? After how many albums, or how many years? How he does it? Does he use the Christmas market, or build anticipation with a long hiatus? After peaking, who drops the most, females, males or bands? Nobody ever answered these questions. Well, nobody up to today as all these questions are addressed right here.
The mastermind of Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon is one of the most successful singer-songwriter of all-time. Exaggeration? No, not according to the data. He started very young. His father was a professional musician and he started singing with Art Garfunkel at the age of 13. Two years later in 1957, he wrote and issued his first recording with his duet partner, Hey Schoolgirl, which went top 50 in the US. For the next 8 years, Simon struggled getting hits, either solo or with Garfunkel. At the time, even their name wasn’t settled, they recorded songs under aliases like Tom & Jerry or Jerry Darcey and True Taylor for his solo material.
The IFPI has now published the most awaited list of the year: the official Worldwide Top 10 best selling albums of 2017. Expectedly, Ed Sheeran‘s Divide leads the way. The ranking still includes several strong surprises!
Please be aware that only albums from labels which do communicate their data to the IFPI are listed. For this reason BTS, EXO and Namie Amuro are missing.
The history will remind that Kendrick Lamar‘s Damn was the most successful album of 2017 in the US. Obviously, it isn’t the top LP since January, but it does lead the list from from late-November 2016 to mid-November 2017 which is what matters for Billboard’s Year-End ahead of Bruno Mars. Maybe more surprising than the #1 is the complete absence of female artists inside the Top 20.
