CSPC: Wham! & George Michael Popularity Analysis

wham! and george michael CSPC Results

George Michael

So, after checking all figures, how many overall album sales equivalent each Wham! & George Michael album achieved? Well, at this point we barely need to do the addition of all figures defined all over this article!

In the following table, all categories display figures that way, e.g. in equivalent album sales. For example, Older singles released in digital format sold the equivalent of 110,000 albums – 1,100,000 downloads with a 10 to 1 weighting.

Never mentioned anywhere among top sellers or most successful albums, the terribly underrated Make It Big concludes on a gigantic 26,2 million equivalent album sales overall. An incredible all around performer, it generated solid numbers from every avenue.

Faith ends up even higher at 26,7 million. That result makes George Michael only the 5th artist with multiple albums over 25 million out of the 38 studied so far, joining Madonna, Led Zeppelin, Celine Dion and Eminem.

He is not only about two albums though as he recorded five consecutive albums over 10 million. Those figures do not include the obvious surge happening at the moment so numbers can only go higher and higher.

Cumulatively, Wham! and George Michael sold 104,6 million equivalent albums. This may not sound like too much for such a legendary singer but one needs to consider his catalog features only 124 songs, while someone like Beyoncé already has 162 tracks without counting songs from the Destiny’s Child. Speaking of them, you may wonder why I mentioned their numbers individually – solo and group – while I put the combined number for Wham! and George Michael. The fact is that there is really no such thing as “Wham! sales” as even their albums include various George Michael solo songs, among which some of their biggest hits like Careless Whisper and A Different Corner.

Following pages list the most successful songs of the artist as well as the full listing of all CSPC results compiled so far to better gauge the place of George Michael in the history of the music industry.

As usual, feel free to comment and / or ask a question!

  1. Thank you very much for those figures. “Make it big” is very underrated, it’s crazy.
There’s another reason why no one should doubt about Wham!’s figures being included into George Michael’s total sale numbers : he wrote and co-produced 90% of each Wham! album. Unfortunately, most people tend to think Wham! was a teen-pop band a la Spice Girls whereas they were closer to bands like Take That for the leading singer (that was George Michael) was a real artist who wrote and produced the band’s songs. Sadly enough, his death is the occasion to consider the quality and real dimension of George Michael’s talent.

  2. Thanks for those interesting figures. May I dare to think that Wham Japanese sales are underestimated.
From oricon’ stats alone “Music From The Edge Of Heaven” is over 180.000 in 2004.

    1. Hi Grendizer,

Thanks for spotting out! Going across my Excel spreadsheet, someway I glitched out non-LP sales for its original run. I’ll update the article as it should be 🙂

      Thanks again!
