Streaming Masters – Twice
The 9-members K-pop group Twice has been exploding year after year since their 2015 debut. They have now reached a point where they are arguably the biggest girl group in the world.
During 2018, they even were the most streamed artist in Japan, outdoing BTS! But just how well are they doing globally?
In order to account for her real popularity in each relevant country, the below sources have been used along with the mentioned ratios that reflect the market share of each area.
– South Korea : Genie streams * 3.05 (consistent with Gaon streaming numbers)
– Japan : AWA streams * 100/5.5 (AWA has 5.5% of the Japanese streaming market)
– Elsewhere : Spotify streams * (370 – 8.5 – 9.5 – 33 – 9) / 207 (370 million global subscribers minus 8.5 million from South Korea minus 9.5 million from Japan minus 33 million from China divided by the number of Spotify only users minus 9 million more Asian users) + Genie streams * 2.25 (uses Genie rather than Spotify to extrapolate markets like Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam)*
*The multiplier for Genie streams have been set to 2.25 instead of the usual 3.05 to not inflate her Asian numbers since her popularity is much larger in South Korea in comparison unlike most western acts and more global K-pop artists like BTS and Blackpink.
Video Streams – China* : Xiami streams * 125/6.5 (Xiami has just over 5% of the Chinese streaming market)
– Elsewhere : Youtube views
*since 96.4% of Chinese streaming platforms are free users, that paid-for users pay less than $2 a month and that they are also used as video streaming platforms, their streams are weighted in par with YouTube streams.
Audio Stream value – 1500 plays equal 1 album unit
Video Stream value – 11,750 views equal 1 album unit
Equivalent Albums Sales (EAS) = ( Spotify * 310/207 + Genie * 3.05 + Genie * 2.25 + AWA * 100/5.5 ) / 1500 + ( Xiami * 125/6.5 + YouTube ) / 11750

Please update it’s been more than 3 years and they had their us debut.
Are Twice on the list of artists we can vote for to be studied?
Is there Data for TWICE Sales in 2020?
I don’t get how you calculate streams like that…for example TT’s audio streams are 71m+164m+78m but the total says 471M
Hi Tay! The formula is explained in the start of the article: Audio Streams – South Korea : Genie streams * 3.05 (consistent with Gaon streaming numbers) – Japan : AWA streams * 100/5.5 (AWA has 5.5% of the Japanese streaming market) – Elsewhere : Spotify streams * (370 – 8.5 – 9.5 – 33 – 9) / 207 (370 million global subscribers minus 8.5 million from South Korea minus 9.5 million from Japan minus 33 million from China divided by the number of Spotify only users minus 9 million more Asian users) + Genie streams * 2.25 (uses Genie… Read more »
It’s pretty surprising seeing all these girl groups -Twice, BP, Fifth Harmony and Little Mix- having almost the same EAS but when it comes to actual sales only LM have big numbers (confirmed by over 130 ww certifications) and Twice are monsters for physical sales in SK and Japan
130m for LM??? They’ve probably sold a few million albums thanks to strong UK sales but that’s pretty much it, for singles I really doubt big downloads since they’re not really that big in the US, Japan or SK. I expect most of their units to come from streaming tbh.
Twice do have really great physical sales for K-pop standards though thanks to a massive fanbase in Japan and SK but in absolute terms it really isn’t that much either.
omg read again, 130 ww certifications not records
Oh my bad, but the point is till there, almost all new acts these days get their majority of units from streaming.
Please update their album sales
pft you’re the same one of the 82m sales?…. lmao this is a serious site not like your inflated numbers
TWICE! The most successful K-POP girl group of all-time with nearly 8 million physical album sales in just 4 years! I guess they would pass 10 million physical sales next year!
I’m not too sure about that, their so called “album total” includes Japanese singles which are weighted 3 times lower than an album, there’s also Girls’ Generation blocking their way as the top K-pop girl group with their massive download sales. but they’ll probably outdo them at some point if they continue to release hit album after hit album at their current pace!
Japanese singles cost as same as Korean albums. while Japanese albums cost 4-5 times more than korean albums. So i wouldn’t say japanese singles weigh 3 times lower than album when it costs the same as korean album
In album sales Twice has surpassed Girls’ Generation last year. with GG being at a total of 4.9M album sales and Twice being at 7M sales as of right now
Yes they’re probably past them by now in album sales but in overall units I think they still have quite a way to go as GGs download sales are massive, and I think their album sales should be past 6m globally as of now.
As for Twice’s singles we have weighed some Japanese ones higher in the past due to the pricing and their length but it really don’t think it would make much of a difference.
They sold 10M+ overall album sales now, please update.
Don’t think they have reached 10m albums just yet (CD singles are not albums) but their CSPC total is probably in the 20m range by now.
I heard that when you include countries like China to their album total, you will get raw album sales of 35m total?
Not sure where you got that from but it’s definitely not the case. They have no download releases there and whatever physical sales they have are already included in Gaon numbers.
Well I also said “include countries like” so not only China.
Gaon numbers reflect all physical sales of their Korean albums no matter where they are sold. The only thing to add on top of them are Japanese releases and some downloads from iTunes etc.
Update: Twice has officially surpassed 10m sales in Korea and Japan combined
They now have +14.5m sales (kor+jpn)
I don’t know what you people think of this Korean pop music style. I show you guys more musicians like Beenzino, Hyuk Oh, Jaurim, Clazziquai. also there are so many indie musicians here.
I know a couple of these, been digging some Hyukoh and Jaurim, personally I’m not really a K-pop fan or anything but it’s what gets requested and certainly who’s getting most sales and streams.
Hi, nice to see you here. Oh I see.. sorry!!! It was not about the matter of preference. just write down. I also performed TT dance in my comany anniversary show. I want to reset my memories haha. thanks.
