Now 17 years into her career, the stature of Taylor Swift continues to grow. She is one of the most powerful women on Earth and is the 4th most successful female artist of all-time. In 2023, her fame has grown to a such a height where Billy Joel himself compared it to 60s Beatlemania after attending a show on the record breaking Eras Tour.

What makes it so incredible is that she has made it to this level at only 33! She remains very active artistically and the general public's interest in her remains strong as shown with the release of Midnights.

At the time of writing, she returns with the rerecording, 1989 (Taylor's Version). We'll now review her career in numbers to see where she stands against her peers and speculate how much further succes she may garner. Let us tell you, the results are stunning.

The Big Picture: Taylor Swift's Career

During the 1989 era in 2014 and 2015, Taylor Swift's success seemed even more extraordinary as it was heavily encapsulated by the pure sales success of both albums and singles. The success of other artists, however, was spread across a larger variety of consumption methods.

Thanks to our revolutionary CSPC approach, we will effectively define how she competes with her peers. These fellow artists include: RihannaBeyoncéKaty Perry, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears.

She is quite similar to Rihanna, who was born in 1988 - only one year before Taylor Swift. Both artists released their debut album at the age of 17. They then both ascended to the stratosphere and have each stayed there now for over a decade.

Both acts are among the top selling digital singles artists of all time. The main difference between them, however, is that Taylor Swift is widely regarded as a strong album seller. She is an albums artist. The opposite can be said for Rihanna, who is more known as a singles artist. This difference is due to the number of Taylor's multi-platinum pure selling albums in the US. In the coming analysis, we will check how accurate this perception really is.

While she used to be on par with many of these artists, it seems that her heavy productivity and dedicated fanbase is responsible for pushing her ahead of anyone else. If there's one thing that's true about Taylor Swift, it's that anything with her name on it is going to sell.

Even while typing this, Taylor is rapidly advancing towards Mariah Carey's current 3rd-place best selling female artist position. She recently surpassed Whitney Houston to join Madonna, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey in the top 4 best selling female artists of all time.

Want to compare the act's albums with others?

The first five of Taylor Swift's studio albums (plus a Christmas EP) total an impressive 42 million units.

Firstly, each of her studio album releases up to 2014's 1989 have topped the 6 million pure sales mark. This is quite an achievement considering how much less she has sold in Europe, proportionally speaking.

With over 70% of her sales coming from the US, these figures can be interpreted in two opposite ways. Either they are extraordinary or not so good. But, this depends on whether you are looking at North American sales or international sales.

Notably, the latter improved with the success of 1989, which sold more than 4 million units outside of the US. This does not account for Chinese downloads, which are listed further below in this article.

It goes to show that while her success is huge in various markets outside of North America, her outstanding sales in the US outshine international results.

The last five albums (Reputation, Lover, folklore, evermore and Midnights) came out when streaming had already solidified its majority share of the consumption-format market. Naturally, these albums sold less than their predecessors. Although, their numbers do remain quite impressive by today's standards.

Indeed, all but evermore are among the 5 top selling female albums in the US from the last 7 years.

The run of folklore had been especially impressive with 8 frames at #1. It managed to outsell Lover, despite that album too building strong sales over time.

Since its release in 2022, Midnights has sold nearly as much as reputation. This is a truly unbelievable feat considering the market's overall continual decrease in total pure sales.

While not as strong, evermore still does very well at 1.7 million units.

This puts her studio album total sales at over 56.4 million units combined.

Taylor Swift songs sales

Below, we list down the artist's physical sales, digital sales and streaming results.

Please be aware that when the artist is regarded as the lead act, they are rewarded with 100% of these units. Whereas featured acts share a 50% piece of the total among each other.

Physical Singles

[wpdatatable id=27 var1=06HL4z0CvFAxyc27GXpf02]

As a reminder, the weighting is calculated by implementing a 10 to 3 ratio between albums and physical singles.

Debut

Taylor Swift's debut album came out in 2006 and sold almost exclusively in North America.

In that era, there were some consistent physical single sales in Europe, Japan, and Australia. Sales had been dead in the US for a while at this point. In fact, none of debut's singles were released physically.

In Europe, the collapse of physical singles came precisely at that moment in 2006 where UK figures dropped from 14 million to 3 million in 2009. Leading to less than 60,000 total units selling per week for the entire market.

Fearless and Collapsing Market Conditions with Red

These aforementioned conditions is the market that Love Story existed in. It was the first hit by Taylor Swift that was promoted overseas.

This song sold few physical copies in Europe and in Australia but wasn't issued elsewhere. With 56,000 sales, it easily remains the her top seller in this format.

You Belong with Me was a hit in the same markets, but received a physical release in Australia only. This explains the lower sales.

By the time she had another true international hit with We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, the physical singles market had completely died even in Europe.

No single from Red was issued in Europe. Meanwhile, her superstar status led the label to release limited editions of her singles in the US. Most of these had only up to 2,500 units available for purchase.

Only two songs being, Ours and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, received unlimited releases. Both songs hit #1 for multiple weeks on the physical sales chart with healthy sales.

In later years, her huge popularity was responsible for more releases in GSA countries.

Since 2019, countless limited releases came out in the US. Some singles were able to secure some sales thanks to her solid fan base. These were for songs such as ME!, cardigan and her early hits.

Digital songs

[wpdatatable id=28 var1=06HL4z0CvFAxyc27GXpf02]

As a reminder, the weighting is calculated using a 10 to 1.5 ratio between albums and digital singles.

Debut

Taylor Swift, her self-titled debut album, was only promoted in North America. All of its singles were strongly successful there.

Format-wise, nearly 16 million sales were achieved between downloads and ringtones in the US and Canada. This amounted to 90% of their total global sales.

It is important to note that these tracks weren't necessarily inescapable #1 hits. However, they have no doubt faced the test of time well, continuing on to sell for many years. This is what led them to ultimately reach such impressive totals.

Teardrops on My Guitar is now collected over 4 million units and joins the same level of success as Our Song.

Fearless

The Fearless era continued Taylor's impressive streak of strong US sellers. Two songs also added international appeal, being Love Story and You Belong With Me. Pop versions were issued for each. Combined, the two songs sold 20 million units globally.

Her success isn't limited to only hit songs though. The incredible success of Taylor Swift for the album format is also visible through her digital sales.

In fact, each of the 18 tracks on Fearless sold 250,000 units or more globally. A few album tracks even broke the million unit threshold! The Fearless era's grand total stands at 35 million units for digital download and ringtone sales.

Speak Now

For the Speak Now era, no song reached higher than 3.8 million units. This was a drop from the success of Fearless. However, the consistency is still superb though. Despite no global hit songs from the album, Speak Now has 6 separate million-sellers. The sales total of the 2010 effort stands at 18.5 million units.

Red

In 2012, Red saw the country icon turned pop hit-maker achieve success on an international scale. Both We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and I Knew You Were Trouble sold over 8.9 million units each.

The two songs sold very well in every English-speaking country and smashed in two different parts of the world. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together was huge in Asia while EDM-inspired I Knew You Were Trouble smashed in Europe.

The Red album saw Taylor continue her minimum run of 5 million-sellers per era. It garnered her 6 in total. The album is now home to 31 million total digital sales for singles.

1989

Factoring her Orphan tracks and features, Taylor Swift was already well over 100 million digital singles sales when 1989 arrived. The Orphan section of her track discography include 8 separate million-selling songs.

During this time, the market share for digital download sales had started to collapse. Conversely, the album's unavailability on streaming platforms managed to hold it up enough, ensuring a strong commercial performance.

Shake It Off managed to sell 9.8 million units globally despite the absence of ringtone sales. It also had very minor success in the South Korean market.

Blank Space sold over 7 million units. This was followed by the release of three more solid hits: Bad Blood, Style and Wildest Dreams. In all, the 1989 era produced 32 million digital sales for the format.

Reputation

Songs from Reputation had a difficult time attempting to match their predecessors. Their presence on Spotify and other on-demand streaming platforms inevitably divided their impact across the distinct services.

This explains why the numbers for this era are not fully relevant without adding streaming results to them.

However for the market conditions at the time, Look What You Made Me Do smashed with nearly 1.8 million units. Ready for It? also proved successful gaining over 800,000 sales. Both are definitely great sellers considering conditions of the market at the time.

2019 onwards: Lover, folklore, evermore and Midnights

Post 2019, the diva remains a super selling force in this format as shown with the tracks on Lover. Market-wide, digital download sales were even weaker in 2019 compared to 2017. Even so, they performed arguably well on iTunes, adding a combined 1.8 million sales.

The surprise release of folklore meant that no song was released before the album. This killed Taylor's edge for this format, as there were no big first week sales. The same occurred with the surprise release of sister-album, evermore.

For this reason, alongside the lack of top 40 entries and the total collapse of the digital download market, explains the anecdotal downloads of songs cardigan and willow.

Midnights and its lead single Anti-Hero proved that with a traditional release she is still able to move significant units in the download format. Even now that most markets have completely given up on the format. Anti-Hero is closing in on 700,000 units after being 2022's US top seller in this format, despite a late-year release.

In total, Taylor Swift has garnered an immense 162 million units sold in downloads and ringtones combined. She is one of the most successful digital artists of all-time.

Streaming

Streaming is made up of both audio and video streams. Our CSPC methodology includes both sub-formats to better reflect the real popularity of each track.

The main source of data for each avenue is respectively Spotify and YouTube. To factor in the growing impact of multiple Asian countries where these platforms aren't the main go-to site for music streaming, more sources have been added.

In order to account for their real popularity in each relevant country, the below sources have been used along with the mentioned ratios that accurately reflect the market share of each area.

Audio Streams
– South Korea: Genie streams * 2.20 (consistent with Gaon streaming numbers)
– Japan: AWA streams * 100 / 4 (AWA has 4% of the Japanese streaming market)
– Arabic world: Anghami streams
– Sub-Saharan Africa: Boomplay + Audiomack streams
– Elsewhere: Spotify streams * Spotify market shares based on artists' market distribution

Video Streams
– China* : QQ video streams * 50 if the song is available for audio stream, QQ video streams * 5 elseway (scale built based on known figures for several major artists)
– Elsewhere : Youtube views increased by 10% to account for various local platforms

*since Chinese streaming platforms are mostly video streaming platforms, their streams are weighted on par with YouTube streams.

Audio Stream value – 1,500 plays equal 1 album unit
Video Stream value – 6,750 views equal 1 album unit

Equivalent Albums Sales (EAS) = ( Spotify * ArtistRatio + Genie * 2.20 + AWA * 100 / 4 + Anghami + Boomplay + Audiomack ) / 1500 + ( QQ views* 50(or 5) + YouTube * 1.1 ) / 6750

Top Hits

CSPC Taylor Swift top streaming hits

Back in 2013, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together was inside the Top 20 most streamed tracks ever on Spotify.

While other artists started to amass large catalog streams, Taylor Swift took off her discography from these platforms. Initially her and her team were against an immediate release-plan on streaming platforms. They strategised, in order to boost sales and revenue due to her proven track record of high pure sales.

Then, her catalog was made available anew in June 2017.

Her hits have now been making up for these 3 years of unavailability. They are strongly successful at it too!

On Spotify, I Don't Wanna Live Forever has now broken the 1.45 billion stream barrier. Look What You Made Me Do is at over 970 million. Additional singles from reputation are in the 400-800+ million range. Notably, songs such as Don't Blame Me have exploded in popularity, now at 822 million (25/10/23). It was at 664 million on the 11th of July, 2023.

Songs from Lover are great performers in this list. The title track, Me!, You Need to Calm Down and Cruel Summer are some of her biggest streaming hits overall in terms of equivalent album sales. The latter, Cruel Summer, came out as a proper single in 2023 after unprecedented fan-demand online for months. It has since spent 8 weeks at #1 on US pop radio, and reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in Autumn. Now, Cruel Summer remains a streaming smash, averaging around 4 - 5 million streams per day on the platform.

folklore registered tremendous numbers on its debut week, and while it has no real big hit, (its top song Cardigan is 15th on her list) solid streams for all its tracks push it over 7.8 million EAS in this format. folklore has also been pivotal in Taylor Swift's running up to becoming the most streamed artist ever on Spotify early 2024.

The next album evermore is in a similar spot, with Willow at #20 as its biggest track. There are also great numbers throughout the track list. They are good enough for nearly 4.8 million sales.

What can we say about Midnights? It recorded quite simply the biggest debut of all-time on Spotify with over 776 million streams and hasn't slowed down since then. Anti-Hero made it into her stacked personal top 10 in less than a year.

We also need to talk about her past hits. They have enjoyed heavy rotation since coming back to the platform some years ago.

There are 55 of them which have already been played over 300 million times on Spotify, with Blank Space leading the pack at 1.56 billion.

Shake It Off and Wildest Dreams confirm the strength of the 1989 era, putting 3 hits inside her top 5, all with over 1.6 million equivalent album sales from streams.

On top of their huge catalog streams on Spotify, their absence when they were first released in 2014 enabled them to register gigantic views on YouTube. Shake It Off and Blank Space add for over 7.2 billion there.

Even her songs, while widely available, do very well with a stunning career total of more than 37 billion views.

Reissues of Fearless and Red under the Taylor's Version tag-name pushed songs from both albums to new heights.

Love Story is now her 4th biggest track, with notable numbers on every platform. You Belong To Me is huge as well, also reaching the million mark in equivalent album sales.

Red tracks are even more outstanding. The historical hits from this era, I Knew You Were Trouble and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together are slightly lower but still strong at 1.2 million and 1.1 million units each, respectively.

The real highlight is on deeper tracks though. Fan favourite track All Too Well, thanks to the 10-minute version, crossed over into the mainstream. It became the longest #1 song of all-time on the Hot 100, and is climbing up the ladder. It stands now at 1.3 million sales.

22 and Red will pass half a million soon, while Everything Has Changed is inside the top 40. In total, 6 tracks from this album are in the top 40 of her ranking.

Just like Don't Blame Me, Enchanted is another deep cut that went viral on TikTok. This brought it to the top 40 with numbers that would usually make the top 10 of numerous other successful artists.

It's worth talking about her Asian statistics too. In China, most of her hits from albums which weren't available for sale at first record register more streams than they do on Spotify.

Because of this specific situation, the leading track in China remains as Love Story.

In South Korea (Genie), she is very popular too. Look What You Made Me Do is the leader there with Blank Space and Me! fighting for the second spot.

In Japan, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and You Belong With Me are on a virtual tie as her #1 song on the format with impressive results also coming from Shake It Off too.

Album-wise, 1989 continues to lead the way. It has an incredible 11.8 million sales. Red came from outside of her top 3 to challenge the top thanks to its smash reissue, it is now over 10.2 million sales from streams.

Lover has overtaken Red to become 2nd in the top 3 with 10.8 million units, while reputation stands at 8.6 million. Midnights is just in front at 8.7 million, folklore at 7.8 million and Fearless at 7.6 million.

In fact, each album from Fearless to Midnights crack the 4.7 million mark, making 9 in a row. This leaves us speechless.

Taylor Swift compilations sales

It sounds fairly logical to add together the weighted sales of one era - studio album, physical singles, downloads, streams - to get the full picture of an album's popularity. For older releases though, they also generate sales of various live, music videos and compilation albums.

All those repackaging-only records do not create value, they exploit the value originating from the parent studio album of each of its tracks instead. Inevitably, when such compilations are issued, this downgrades catalog sales of the original LP.

Thus, to accurately gauge the worth of these releases, we need to re-assign sales proportionally to its contribution of all the compilations which feature its songs. The following table explains this method.

The distribution process

CSPC Taylor Swift Speak Now World Tour Live sales distribution

So, to understand this table, check the example of the Speak Now World Tour Live line. Those figures mean it sold 590,000 units worldwide. The second statistics column displays that every version of all the songs included on this package add for 5,522,035 equivalent album sales from streams of all sub-formats.

The second part, on the right of the table, shows how many equivalent streams are coming from each original album. It also includes the share it represents on the overall package.

Thus, streaming figures tell us that songs from Fearless are responsible for 40% of the Speak Now World Tour Live's attractiveness. Therefore, meaning it generated 235,000 of its 590,000 album sales and so on for the other records.

Compilations sales figures listing

CSPC Taylor Swift compilation sales distribution

Here is the most underestimated indicator of an album’s success – the amount of compilation sales of all kinds it generated. Due to the dependency of sales for the original studio albums of these releases, they are a key piece to the jigsaw when calculating sales.

These numbers are obtained by applying the method from the section The distribution process to all packages listed under Compilation sales figures listing category.

To offset bulk buying, Chinese downloads are weighted as per their price, at selling price / 50 * 1.5, which is roughly 0.6 for Taylor Swift's albums. Sales occurring post-September 2021, when the market became regulated, are counted in full.

We see that the American superstar is doing great in this country, with numbers continually going higher and higher.

They accurately make up for the absence of compilations products nowadays like tour DVDs.

This section also features the newly recorded versions of Fearless and Red, which naturally are allocated in full to the original albums.

Taylor Swift Career CSPC Results

So after analysing all the figures, how many overall equivalent album sales has each Taylor Swift album achieved? Well, at this point we hardly need to add up all of the figures defined in this article!

By 2013, Fearless had sold so many units that it was poised to remain her career peak. It now continues to perform like a blockbuster, now up to 25 million.

By 2016, monster smash 1989 had moved ahead of Taylor's own successful predecessors. It seems likely to hold this top spot. Incredibly, it keeps gaining consistently, and the reissue is still yet to be released. It's up to 32.5 million units overall.

It has also won the fight with Ed Sheeran's X to be the biggest album from 2014. A battle that it was losing for years due to the insane success of the British singer in the mid-late 2010s. The diva has impressively reversed the situation, gaining back the deficit. It's now jumped over it without needing the reissue.

Fearless is also climbing historical rankings. It blew away Beyoncé's I Am... Sasha Fierce to become the runner up from 2008 behind Lady Gaga's The Fame.

Interestingly, although this sector has experienced a steady decline now for 7 years, it must be noted that 1989 is the album that generated the highest number of download sales along with Fearless. Its songs have had only a short time to add relevant catalog sales.

This emphasises how the absence of streaming boosted its digital sales and, consequently, how necessary it is to look at every music consumption format possible to reach a meaningful conclusion.

Red sprinted its way up, becoming her 3rd 20 million seller. It claims more than 8 million sales since the release of Taylor's Version in November 2021. This climb concludes with two huge achievements:

The album is now 2012's biggest ahead of Bruno Mars and Imagine Dragons' classics. It also passed Eminem's 3rd top seller, Recovery. This means that no other artist from this millennium owns a top 3 as solid as her top 3.

Both Taylor Swift and Speak Now have gone up to 11.5 million and 17.5 million equivalent album sales, respectively. This is an immense total for anyone. The latter has now exploded with the reissue.

Then comes reputation, which recently turned into another 10 million seller for Taylor. It now has already reached its way to 14.5 million units! After a strong first week of sales, led by her fan base and multiple marketing gimmicks, the album's sales collapsed faster than expected.

It has been able to sustain its appeal fairly well in the mid-run though. Reputation has even improved its performance with time thanks the attention brought by The Eras Tour and forthcoming reissue.

Its success is in the same league as Taylor Swift and Speak Now. This is especially the case once we consider it had much less time to amass sales, comparatively.

Lover was almost on 10 million around a year ago. Believe it or not, the album currently stands on 15 million units. It is quite literally flying up the 2019 ladder.

A year and a half ago we wrote, "...although there is still a long way, it isn't impossible to see all her albums up to Lover reach 10 million at some point." Even when we are optimistic, Taylor Swift does her magic and performs even better. Her first 8 albums, from Debut - Folklore have all passed 11.5 million units!

folklore is still recent, and while it lacks hits, the total sales are going through the roof at 12.3 million units.

Evermore has scored 7.3 million units to date. When released, it seemed that Swift had entered a decreasing trend. The way Taylor Swift manages to get her albums climbing forever grants strong numbers in the long run.

Speaking of a negative trend, Midnights changed everything in no time. Out for one year, it's now up to the unreal total of 13.3 million units.

We also want to point out how difficult it is to hit 10 million this many times. Once your casual listeners are already satisfied with plenty of hits from you, it's difficult to sustain such demand.

In fact, Taylor Swift used to be the only female singer with 5 separate 10-million sellers this millennium - overall, Eminem, the strongest competitor, owns 6. Now, she destroys everyone as she claims 9 (!) albums over 10 million units.

What's safe to say is that Taylor Swift has retained her superstar aura. This has granted her strong sales for her upcoming releases, along with an immensely valuable back catalog.

Furthermore, in quiet periods, she now records well over 2 million sales per month. What about the total to date though? Taylor Swift currently has a total of more than 180 million equivalent album sales. She has recently passed Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey!

She has also left behind Coldplay and Rihanna to become the biggest music act to debut in 2000 or later. Each day she is widening the gap, making herself more out of reach for them.

Only 4 other female singers own 3 albums at 20+ million. Madonna, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion.

Only 4 other acts own 9 albums or more at 10+ million. The Beatles, Queen, The Rolling Stones, and Madonna.

Yes, she is in that league now. And she is still only 33. Phew.

Singles CSPC results

The list is compiled in album equivalent sales generated by each song. Therefore, these figures are not merged units of singles formats. Instead, it includes the weighted sales of the song's physical single, download, ringtone and streaming. Also included is its share among sales of all albums on which it is featured.

Hi Nathan!

With 150 million downloads / ringtones, the change of formula alone provides her an extra 7,5 million! YouTube views have also been integrated in-between. Add the new songs, the ongoing catalog sales and the slightly underestimated downloads from 2008/2012 years, you get that 13 million push! Rihanna will have a similar increase or even bigger when updated.

Hi!

This is a very nice update guys! I didn't expect her to jump so much in terms of equivalent album sales!

Regarding album sales, 1989 increased a lot! Outside of the remaining markets, the album sold 600K, a huge amount for today's sales climate. Can you tell me where it sold that many copies?

Her Asian success has also been quite amazing as well! Is Taylor the biggest selling international album act there since 2006?

Also, although not about Taylor, but you mentioned that her albums sold very well due to the absence of a compilation album. However, do those albums still mean a thing in today's music climate? Since so many people can cherry pick their fav songs on iTunes, and the fact that Spotify allows users to stream tracks, even if a decent album selling act like Adele or Taylor released a greatest hits album today, it wouldn't sell a thing! Hence, I think this point about no compilation album is quite useless. The only long format release that I see can sell decently today are music videos. Live albums and EPs don't even sell anymore.

Anyway, I hope you will update Rihanna, Beyonce and Adele so we can see who is the most successful act of this generation. Also looking forward for your analysis on Sam Smith.

You should have waited like 3 months after the official release of Reputation to update Taylor's CSPC.
It would have been better to update Adele, Beyoncé or Rihanna.

hello!I think video streams converting to sales should be the same as audio streams because 200 views=1 dollar revenue according to socialblade or trackalytics. You can check!

It's amazing to see how Taylor Swift after about one year of last year's report (analysis) released has sold 55 to 68 million copies sold. These modern artists today sell more discs (records) with digital singles, streaming songs than studio albums or physical albums, perhaps the only exception is just Taylor Swift and above all Adele.
Then I imagine that after Taylor Swift's up-to-date analysis, will be analyzed by a great singer (Elvis Presley, Elton John or Barbra Streisand) or a great group (Queen, Eagles, Aerosmith or AC / DC).
