Streaming Masters – Rihanna

Rihanna streaming pic

She was undoubtedly the queen of download era. Does Rihanna dominate the streaming world just as much? Or is she down to more common numbers today now that she is well over a decade into her career?

Rihanna streaming review – the method

Streaming is made up of audio and video streams. Our CSPC methodology now includes both to better reflect the real popularity of each track. The main source of data for each avenue is respectively Spotify and YouTube.

To factor in the growing impact of multiple Asian countries where these platforms aren’t always the go-to site for music streaming, more sources have been added.

In order to account for their real popularity in each relevant country, the below sources have been used along with the mentioned ratios that reflect the market share of each area.

Audio Streams
– South Korea: Genie streams * 2.20 (consistent with Gaon streaming numbers)
– Japan: AWA streams * 68 / 4 (AWA has 4% of the Japanese streaming market, and 32% are already considered through Spotify’s extrapolation)
– Arabic world: Anghami streams
– Sub-Saharan Africa: Boomplay + Audiomack streams
– Elsewhere: Spotify streams * 649 / 406 (649 million subscribers of global platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Deezer, etc. against 406 million from Spotify itself) + Genie streams * 2.20 (uses Genie rather than Spotify to extrapolate markets like Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam)

Video Streams
– China* : QQ video streams * 50 if the song is available for audio stream, QQ video streams * 5 elseway (scale built based on known figures for several major artists)
– Elsewhere : Youtube views increased by 10% to account for various local platforms

*since Chinese streaming platforms are mostly video streaming platforms, their streams are weighted on par with YouTube streams.

Audio Stream value – 1,500 plays equal 1 album unit
Video Stream value – 6,750 views equal 1 album unit

Equivalent Albums Sales (EAS) = ( Spotify * 649/406 + Genie * 2.20 * 2 + AWA * 68 / 4 + Anghami + Boomplay + Audiomack ) / 1500 + ( QQ views* 50(or 5) + YouTube * 1.1 ) / 6750

Please be aware that when the artist is regarded as the lead act, he is rewarded with 100% of these units, while featured acts share among them a 50% piece of the totals.

in the EAS artists page it shows Rihanna’s Streaming EAS is 27.4m and here it’s 26.9m, Taylor Swift’s numbers also decreased by 600k after the update…

do you think there’s a way to adjust the tool that estimates the EAS based on Spotify streams cause it seems like it’s inflating it.

Hi L500! I don’t think we can do much better, the current tool takes the last CSPC, calculates the Spotify-rest of platforms ratio, then applies it to the last known Spotify total. The thing is, in-between we switched Xiami to QQ, so results for China are a bit different, and then AWA is losing ground in Japan, so when updated it may deflate a bit streams in this market. Plus, through the last 2 years or so, Spotify opened in nearly all these markets we used to track with specific platforms like Japan and South Korea, so artists strong there… Read more »

thanks MJD !

excited for the CSPC article

Considering she is also a powerhouse on other streaming services like Apple Music, her Spotify numbers are mind-boggling. And as a reminder, she hasn’t released music in over 5 years.

Believe came out last year

I referred to a new solo album. Anti was released 2016.

Incredible numbers.
27m is so huge, probably 2nd most for all women behind Ariana?
Excited for her cspc update.

Hi chartmasters team. Is it possible for Rihanna to one day beat Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand results in the long futute? How about Celine Dion? Tq in advance.

Hi Michael!

There is still a long way to go, but why not? 90s divas are currently climbing fairly slowly. Rihanna is still exploiting her catalog like crazy. She is in the same spot right now as Madonna during the 90s: still able to do very well with new music and her catalog gaining solid sales year after year. It will depend on how much longer she will be able to maintain this pace. Once her songs turn outdated, that will get harder, but for now she is no doubt in the correct road.

That would be nice. It would be interesting if she could shake up the big 5 rankings because these 5 ladies have been holding on to that ranking for such a long time.

El Jolito

She’s not prolific enough I don’t think. I can’t see her getting close.

She gains 5m every year in recurrent sales whilst they gain like 1-2m
it could happen tbh.
she already has more songs than Whitney.

El Jolito

Adele will on the other hand I think sell lots. A lot of it has to do with peoples tastes, longevity etc.

That is a big huge jump. Especially GGGB considering how long it was released prior to the arrival of streaming.

Agustin Alvarez

Why does this article have so many dislikes? Anyways, amazing numbers!

Haters… ignore them.

tom riise

Probably both haters and virgins.

Beyoncé fans

Agustin Alvarez

I’m a Beyonce stan. Most of us like Rihanna a lot so I don’t think that’s it.

Nah, more like Taylor Swift fans.

tom riise

Insane numbers 🙂
