Yearly Most Successful Female Album: The New Generation (1999-2017)

IMG_0095

Our female celebration continues with its final chapter. From 1999, a new wave of female superstars replaced the former one with the inevitable Britney Spears leading the way.

The fantastic run of Madonna, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston came to an abrupt end with this switch. This big 4 topped 12 out of 15 years from 1984 to 1998. We will see that the story has been completely different since 1999.

As a reminder, guidelines of this articles can be found on the first chapter here.

I forgot to mention it in the previous message but Missy Elliott’s “Miss E … so addictive” album was successful as an album (nearly 2M in the US, Gold in France and Canada, Platinum in the UK) and its singles were successful too. Maybe it’s over 5M EAS, don’t you think ?

Rell

Don’t you think Shakira’s 2017 El Dorado album may end up with more than 5M EAS ? The album is not successful by itself but its singles are doing great apparently on streaming platforms and on YT where she’s always been huge.

Will you do a similar list for male solo or decades list for female solo?

Jeff

Hi MJD, huge work as always!

I’m looking for CSPC data for
_ Red Hot Chili Peppers
_ Depeche Mode
_ R.E.M

Are them on your to-do list?
Thanks!

Rell

Thanks for your answers about Ciara’s “Goodies” and Sheryl Crow’s eponymous LP. I also wonder if Bjork’s “Debut” isn’t over 5M sales. I believe it had some consistent catalog sales in the 90’s and early 00’s. I asked in another topic but you must not have seen …

Hi, MJD.

Isn’t Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ the best selling era ever? Or at least the best selling female era ever?

Then why you’re saying it’s behind Lady Gaga’s ‘The Fame’? And what you’re referring to “in this format”?

I mean, ‘Teenage Dream’ era sold more than 50M singles just in the United States.

Thanks.

Mario Axel

So ‘Teenage Dream’ is only the best selling era of the decade?

Could you make a ‘CSPC: Top Selling Eras Ever’ breaking down each single of the album and of course the album by itself showing both pure and equivalent sales?

Thanks.
