Yearly Most Successful Female Album: The New Generation (1999-2017)

Our female celebration continues with its final chapter. From 1999, a new wave of female superstars replaced the former one with the inevitable Britney Spears leading the way.

The fantastic run of Madonna, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston came to an abrupt end with this switch. This big 4 topped 12 out of 15 years from 1984 to 1998. We will see that the story has been completely different since 1999.

As a reminder, guidelines of this articles can be found on the first chapter here.

Emilien Roelans

“Among all artists who recorded the most successful female album of the year from 1960 to 2017, only one doesn’t come from an English-speaking country: Shakira.”

…what about Céline? 🙂

Hi Emilien Roelans!

Celine originated from Quebec, Canada, an English-speaking country. Same goes for Enya, who comes from Ireland, which is an English-speaking country as well!

Canada is a english speaking country but the town where Celine grew up was a french speaking place that’s why she doesnt really know English when she was young.

I’m from Canada and I can tell you that both French and English are the official languages of Canada, it’s in the constitution. However because English is one of those languages, the original sentence “only one doesn’t come from an English-speaking country” still makes sense.

Many parts of Quebec are entirely French-speaking tho, and there is an entire French culture within the province that is very different from that of France and the rest of Canada.

Since that is the case then Celine is considered a music artist who didnt come from an english speaking community.

Hi, can you please explaind me how did you get with the copies from Rihanna’s ANTi album? as far as i know the album as sold more than 2,6 Millions WW (without the 1 Million of samsung and without streaming) what did you do to get that numbers?

Uh MJD i know this isnt related, forgive me; when will be then next voting for artists be held?

You can vote in Sticky thread for Requests

I don’t mean to be pushy with my requests but what about Ciara’s “Goodies” ? It went 3xP in the US, was certified gold or platinum in various countries (UK, Canada, Japan, Ireland) and its singles were rather successful, as far as I can remember, in Europe.

Forgot to say that I’m looking forward to seeing who Will be #1 for 2017. Can’t see Taylor stay there. She’ll be replaced by Dua Lipa IMO.

Interesting to see much more variety in this frame than during the 1983-1998 years.

What about The Sweet Escape and Innocent Eyes?

Innocent Eyes

Really thought that TSE would be over 5M CSPC. On the other hand, pleased to see Innocent Eyes at 4M CSPC. Thought it would be at just 3M or slightly under.

Hi MJD, very interesting article. I’m curious about something. You said Shakira did wonders in India. Can you give us an idea of her success there through some numbers?

Thank you very much! I’m surprised Toni Braxton’s The Heat did not make the list in 2001. « He wasn’t man enough » was a hit. And what about Fiona Apple’s first album in 1996 ? And Tori Amos’s ?

Chrysalynne Lingling

Hi, how do Blackout and Femme Fatale by Britney Spears rank?

Britney Spears dominating for two years in a row, and are in the top 5 for 4 albums in a row. Nice. 🙂

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
