France Album Sales: M. Pokora

Robin des Bois Musical (2013) Era

Now on top of his career, M. Pokora made a very risky move in 2013 by accepting the leading role in Robin of the Wood Musical. France is a strong place for musicals with some of them like Starmania and Notre-Dame de Paris being among the very top selling albums of all-time. A lot of popular singers started their career with a successful musical. This being said, the contrary isn’t true as famous singers do not participate on them.

M. Pokora broke this unwritten rule by getting fully involved on this project in spite of his incontestable popularity at that time. His song Le Jour Qui Se Rêve was the leading track peaking at #22, a good result in a digital era for an adult contemporary song. The musical’s album, which released a mere 3 weeks after Pokora’s Live A Bercy topped charts, debuted at #3 which may be regarded as somewhat disappointing. The competition was huge however, with Les Enfoirés topping the chart and a new Depeche Mode album debuting at #2. In that week, M. Pokora had at least one song on as many as 8 albums in the Top 40 – Les Enfoirés at #1, Robin of the Wood at #3, Génération Goldman at #9, his Live A Bercy at #11, along with compilations at #32, #33 and #35 plus his A La Poursuite du Bonheur album at #37.

Despite not breaking records for the number of weeks inside the Top 10, like some very famous musicals did, Robin of the Wood remained firmly inside the Top 50 for a number of weeks. Weeks became months, and when the album turned a year old, it had yet to drop below that section of the charts. This solidity enabled the LP to accumulate significant sales. Without causing that much noise, it closed 2013 as the 9th top seller of the year, one spot higher than A La Poursuite du Bonheur in 2012. Just like in 2012 too, both the annual Les Enfoirés album and Génération Goldman made the year end Top 10, meaning M. Pokora repeated his impressive feat.

Sales-wise, Robin of the Wood moved 280,000 units for the year, his live album nearly 70,000 copies and his previous studio album just over 60,000, bringing its to date tally to 339,000 units sold. His catalog also sold impressively well with Mise A Jour selling 20,000 units, a 2CD box A La Poursuive du Bonheur / Mise A Jour moving 7,000 units and another 2CD box with Mise A Jour and MP3 also charting during 2013. One decade after his win on the M6 TV show, the singer was definitely a real Pop star.

During the following months, with the musical Robin of the Wood touring, French sales continued to grow hitting 350,000 units in early 2015.
