Taylor is short listed as TIME‘s person of the year 2023. If she is picked this could crown her monumental year of almost grossing 1 billion $ in ticket sales just this year, smashing with Anti-Hero and Cruel summer the charts, selling approx. 200 Million $+ in merchandise items (on tour and online), a 250 Million $ concert movie and generating more than 40 Million CSPC (including 28 billion streams from Spotify).
A list of the most successful twelve month periods would certainly be an interesting study/article.
I'm assuming the twelve months following the release of 'Thriller' in 1982/83 for Michael Jackson would be the one Swift would have to top?
CM posted thriller sales from 1982 to 1984. It was like 23 million by end of 1983 and 37 million by end of 1984. Now we assume physical singles, dvds sales , old catalog etc. They must put them around 30 million for 1983 and near same for 1984. His biggest year is 2009.
Just a small precision Gdhdhdgddlunddo, Smiley mentioned twelve month periods rather than a year. On calendar years, Taylor is definitely outdoing MJ in 83 & 84. If we look at Jackson's sales from about March 83 to March 84 though, that would surely add for well over 40 million as this includes the large majority of his 83/84 total sales. I still think Taylor Swift is doing more still, but that would be closer than on calendar years.
Would it be your best guess then that Taylor Swift is currently going through the greatest peak of popularity by any artist?
Taylor has been crowned Time Magazine's 2023 Person of The Year. She is the just the ninth women to receive the distinction ever, the first solo entertainer, and joins an elite group of people who have won the distinction twice (after her win as part of a group in 2017 for 'the silence-breakers'). She is the sixteenth person (or group) to win POTY twice, joining the likes of folks like Barack Obama, FDR, Stalin, and Reagan.
Yeah she's basically the first artist to be Person of The Year. Before that, Bono was on the cover alongside Bill & Melinda Gates in 2005 as "The Good Samaritans" (for their charity work) and as you said Taylor in 2017 with 5 other women (for MeToo).
The Beatles would've been in 1964, when Lyndon Johnson was elected President which is often enough to be Person of The Year. In his case, Time justified it by saying he "secured the passage of the Civil Rights Act, declared a War on Poverty, and escalated US involvement in the Vietnam War." Also the fact that The Beatles weren't a "person" maybe didn't help?
As for MJ, one thing to note is that the success of Thriller took place over two years (83-84), for example the Thriller single was released in january 84. In december 83 Thriller had "only" sold about 20m copies, for comparison the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack had sold 30m.
Agreed with Lyndon Johnson, also they have gotten a lot more liberal with their use of 'groups' as POTY.
Looks like repu tv is coming and she has hinted about ts 11 too. Wonder debut tv will get release in 2024 too? 2024 might end up bigger than 2023. If 2023 is 40 to 45 million eas year, 2024 might turn out to be 45 to 50 million eas year. And if we assume 2025 as slow and hiatus year, she might catch madonna by 2026 end.
Taylor entered the year at 139M CSPC, leaves the year at around 184M CSPC. That is 45M CSPC created in a year. Pollstar reported her 66 concerts grossed $1.15 Billion, grossed $200 Million from merch sales. And a $250 Million movie. Now also TIME’s Person of the year. These 2023 stats alone would be considered a great lifetime accomplishment for any artist, but for Taylor it was the span from one birthday to the next.
I think , it's optimistic about $1,15 billion from 66 concerts . More realistic $900-950 million . To the end of 2023 she will reach 186 million EAS .
