Since streaming took a monster share of the music industry, the most streamed albums are mechanically among the most successful albums of the year.
On the other hand, it’s difficult to complete our CSPC rankings as studying deeply discographies of major artists takes a lot of time. It’s even more complicated to get updated lists for new releases since the data evolves so fast.
We can’t keep our CSPC articles updated constantly, but we can set up scripts to scan the new releases and see how they perform in streaming. So that’s what we did!

While at first it felt that streaming was confirming the trend set by downloads to put the music industry focus back on singles rather than albums, history proved this perception is wrong.
The first ever LP to be reported by the streaming platform as the annual leader was the star studded Nothing but the Beat by David Guetta in 2012, with The Heist by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis topping the 2013 list. Both were heavily supported by big hits, but soon albums consumed in full exploded.
Random Access Memories by Daft Punk or Beyoncé‘s eponymous album were some early examples. We review annual leaders below.

By 2016, X by Ed Sheeran was firmly the most streamed album of all-time. During the summer of 2017, Purpose by Justin Bieber moved to the top. Soon afterwards, Divide by Ed Sheeran which already shattered daily, weekly and yearly records, climbed to the all-time top, also claiming the biggest song ever with Shape of You.
Divide separated itself from the pack so much that for many years it felt unbeatable, becoming the first to reach every milestone from 6 billion to 13 billion. Ultimately, the shocker came from Puerto Rico’s Bad Bunny, who recorded an insane run with 2022’s Un Verano Sin Ti.
The Latin juggernaut scored 618,159,971 streams on its first week, beating the top debut held by Drake‘s Scorpion at that point, and never slowed down. After a mere 15 months, it caught Divide and then became the first album ever to reach 15 billion streams.

Which albums are eligible? (click for list)1 Studio albums are obviously eligible. As long as they don’t get a substantial amount of streams from songs on prior studio albums by the artist.
2 EPs, mini albums, mixtapes and demos are eligible if they follow the rules above. The minimum requirement is at least 4 distinct tracks or a runtime over 15 minutes. Although if a full album with shared tracks is released later will it usually get prioritized over these.
3 Albums with different renditions of tracks such as live or remix albums are eligible. This also applies albums with translated versions of songs. However, if the tracks’ play counts are shared with the original album will they be excluded.
4 Compilations can be eligible if they have 0 tracks from other eligible releases. Although they need can’t have loads of tracks released several years prior.
5 Various artists compilations and soundtracks can also be eligible if the vast majority of their streams are from tracks made specifically for the release.
In case several versions of the same album exist, the one with the highest total of streams is displayed as long as it doesn’t include bonus tracks from other albums.
The global ranking (g#) is the comprehensive ranking for albums over the 500 million mark. Below this number, albums listed are top recent albums or top streamers from local markets, for them the global ranking is meaningless.
The column EAS stands for Equivalent Album Sales reflects the worth of these audio streams on par with album units. This data extrapolates remaining streaming platforms.
Yes, their streams are included in full as the album total is effectively the sum of release to date streams of all its tracks.

Nevermind by Nirvana is the most listened to album of the 90s, and of all pre-2000 albums in general. 2001 by Dr. Dre and Californication by the Red Hot Chili Peppers occupy positions 2 and 3 for the decade.
Thriller by Michael Jackson leads among the albums with the most streams from the 1980s. Appetite For Destruction by the Guns N’ Roses is runner up, followed by Back In Black by AC/DC.
Rumours by Fleetwood Mac is the most streamed 1970s album. It leads over A Night at the Opera by Queen and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.
Abbey Road by The Beatles is the most played 1960s album. It is followed by Willy And The Poor Boys by Creedence Clearwater Revival. The Beatles also takes up the 3rd spot with their self titled “White Album”.
A Winter Romance by Dean Martin is the most streamed pre 1960s album. The follow ups are Elvis Presley’s Christmas Album and Christmas Songs by Frank Sinatra. The leader among non-holiday albums is Berry Is On Top by Chuck Berry.
