France Album Sales: Madonna

Erotica (1992) Era

This album marks the end of the superstar years of Madonna. If she was in a league of her own during the 80s, only challenged by Whitney Houston, the early 90s would be much more difficult for the artist who would now not only be challenged, but completely crushed by the likes Mariah Carey and Celine Dion.

Erotica was highly controversial, but this has never prevented someone from selling well as proved many times by Madonna herself. The real issue for the Erotica album is that it seriously lacked a big hit, unlike all her previous albums. The title track issued as the lead single peaked at #23, a truly weak result for a leading song that has the huge advantage to face initially no competition from its parent album. It was Madonna’s first lead single to miss the Top 10 since her debut. Deeper And Deeper peaked at #17, Bad Girl at #44, Fever at #31, with all three adding for only 12 weeks inside the Top 50.

The album did debut at #1 and stay on top for two weeks thanks to the artist’s name, however it had no legs as by week 4 it had dropped out of the Top 10 already and never climbed back in. Initial hype was enough still to bring the album up to a calculated 271,000 units by the end of 1993.
