France Album Sales: Madonna

American Life (2003) Era

Worldwide, American Life was for long pretty much regarded as the biggest flop of Madonna career. In France, the least we can say is that this album performed quite well.

The norm on Madonna singles in France continued as once again only the lead single, the title track, reached the Top 10 at #10. All five songs from American Life yet charted for at least 16 weeks each, all providing additional legs to the album. This latter record debuted at #1 with 48,000 sales, the only album that topped Florent Pagny massive album Ailleurs Land in its first eight weeks and then spent 15 weeks inside the Top 10. The support of all singles maintained it inside the Top 100 for a much longer period, a total of 17 months. By the end of this solid run the album was over 450,000 copies.

The year 2003 also saw the release of Madonna last contract for Maverick Records, Remixed & Revisited. This set was one more example of French charts from SNEP errors as it charted from its debut week inside the Catalog chart. While each and every album – studio, soundtrack, compilation, remix album – out of her 16 releases up to that date sold well over 200,000 copies in France, Remixed & Revisited was still on a very low 29,000 units sold by the end of 2008.
