France Album Sales: Madonna
Confessions On A Dance Floor (2005) Era
143,450 units. That’s the number of copies sold by Confessions On A Dance Floor in its first week in France. By the time, it was the second best debut ever by a foreign release, runner up to Michael Jackson 2001 album Invincible. This figure represented a massive 25,97% of combined sales from the other 199 albums charted in the Top 200.
Even for Madonna standards those results were mind blowing. It all happened thanks to Hung Up, the leading single of this era which was utterly successful. After four weeks at #1 the physical single was deleted, quickly dropping to #16, a limited reissue of a remix of the song shot it back to #1 for one more week, showing very well how big the track was. In the digital side, even if the market size was still very low, the domination of Madonna was incredible. She was #1 of the year both in the Singles side and in the Albums side, both times leading the runner up by 2 to 1. As it wasn’t enough, Hung Up was also the #1 selling digital single in 2006.
Along with Johnny Hallyday album Ma Vérité, follow up to two albums that sold over 3,5 million units combined prior that, Confessions On A Dance Floor dominated the Christmas season. It extended its run until the end of February thanks to #5 second single Sorry. By early May, the album was leaving the Top 40 but at the same time it was certified Diamond, representing a massive 750,000 units shipped. During the following months, the album weekly sales decreased slowly, until being down to #77 by mid-August. The Confessions Tour came in Paris then, rocketing the album up to #9. Down to #180 in December, the album shot up again to #11 in January thanks to its first midprice campaign. By the end of 2008, the album was up to an incredible total of 911,448 physical units sold, plus about 15,000 downloads.
Weirdly, after a 22 years career with no live album released, Madonna then released back to back live records. In 2006, I’m Going To Tell You A Secret covering her Re-Invention World Tour was released. It debuted and peaked at #8 selling just 21,000 DVDs and 29,000 CDs. This latter album was up to nearly 37,000 units by the end of 2008. Following year, in January 2007, The Confessions Tour was released. Representing a much bigger era, it performed better too by debuting at #2 with near 28,000 sales. By the end of the year, the album was up to 87,000 sales while the DVD sold a huge 59,000 units.
