By 2013, it had been 10 years that Britney Spears hadn’t reach 200,000 units sold with one of her albums and the market has collapsed ever since. If she survived thanks to hits and airplay, she was definitely under threat of a terrible flop in the case of unsuccessful singles.
That’s exactly what happened with Britney Jean album. The only single that got some airplay was Work Bitch, but it came out months before the album and was definitely flagged clubbing hit, hardly an album booster. Thus, when Britney Jean came out a few days only before Christmas, while tons of other albums were selling like hot cakes, it debuted at an unreal #22 position despite selling nearly 13,000 units. One can expect a rebound once all Christmas cash-ins drop out but the album had hardcore drops every week going from 22 to 56 to 101, lasting only six weeks inside the Top 200 ranking and never coming back. When all was said and done, the album was on 30,000 units, a total insanely low considering the artist fame.
