France Album Sales: Britney Spears

Blackout (2007) Era

The four years hiatus between In The Zone and fresh new album Blackout was more due to… Britney blackout than for production or recording purposes. During all this time her image suffered a lot from various scandals with the general public almost forgetting she was a music singer before being a public star.

Even if lead single Gimme More debuted at #5, it was far from being a successful track as the dying physicals market was downgrading a lot Single Chart relevance. The lack of appeal of the song was obvious in the album side as Blackout debuted at #2 but with only 13,659 sales. Worst, the album legs were inexistent as it was all the way down to #56 a mere three weeks later.

Selling barely 40,000 units during 2007, Blackout left the Top 100 at the start of 2008 and never came back into it for the year as no other single was able to gain traction. Its sales were under 20,000 units for that year. Surprisingly, after an awful start and an awful middle-run, the album remained alive for most of 2009. It peaked higher than the previous year (#70 against #90) and charted in more different months (six against five). All together, the album sold 80,000 units by the end of 2009.
