Streaming Masters – Queen

Queen streaming review

What better time, in the wake of their hugely successful biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, to look again at the streaming prowess of Classic Rock legends, Queen.

Queen streaming review – the method

Streaming is made up of audio and video streams. Our CSPC methodology now includes both to better reflect the real popularity of each track. The main source of data for each avenue is respectively Spotify and YouTube.

To factor in the growing impact of multiple Asian countries where these platforms aren’t always the go-to site for music streaming, more sources have been added.

In order to account for their real popularity in each relevant country, the below sources have been used along with the mentioned ratios that reflect the market share of each area.

Audio Streams
– South Korea : Genie streams * 3.05 (consistent with Gaon streaming numbers)
– Japan : AWA streams * 100/5.5 (AWA has 5.5% of the Japanese streaming market)
– Elsewhere : Spotify streams * (370 – 8.5 – 9.5 – 33 – 9) / 207 (370 million global subscribers minus 8.5 million from South Korea minus 9.5 million from Japan minus 33 million from China divided by the number of Spotify only users minus 9 million more Asian users) + Genie streams * 3.05 (uses Genie rather than Spotify to extrapolate markets like Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam)

Video Streams
– China* : Xiami streams * 125/6.5 (Xiami has just over 5% of the Chinese streaming market)
– Elsewhere : Youtube views

*since 96.4% of Chinese streaming platforms are free users, that paid-for users pay less than $2 a month and that they are also used as video streaming platforms, their streams are weighted in par with YouTube streams.

Audio Stream value – 1500 plays equal 1 album unit
Video Stream value – 11,750 views equal 1 album unit

Equivalent Albums Sales (EAS) = ( Spotify * 310/207 + Genie * 3.05*2 + AWA * 100/5.5 ) / 1500 + ( Xiami * 125/6.5 + YouTube ) / 11750

Great job: my congratulations! It would be positive if also this time it was shared by Brian May’s official Facebook page, like it happened in November 2017. I have just a question: should the sales of the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” be considered as the proper sales of Queen? We know that in UK it was the most selling video in 2019. It would be interesting to know how many sales the movie has reached worldwide. I presume 7,00,000/8,000,000. Do you agree? Moreover it was sold also in this format: DVD or Blu Ray + CD of the Soundtrack. Lately Brian… Read more »

Sorry for the super late reply! Thank you 🙂

Impressive numbers for an act of their age. Eight albums over half a million through streaming alone.

Bohemian Rhapsody has now crossed the 800m stream count on Spotify when you count all versions of the track:

The current total is 800,064,266 – it will be the first pre-Spotify track to break 1b Spotify streams sometime this year (unless its streams slow down a lot!)

Bohemian Rhapsody has now crossed the 900m stream count on Spotify when you count all versions of the track:

The current total is 900,212,983– it will be the first pre-Spotify track to break 1b Spotify streams sometime this year – probably by August/September as its still streaming over 1m streams a day.

Bohemian Rhapsody has finally achieved the 1 billion stream count on Spotify (when you add all versions of tracks together – the main version is at 939,830,086).

It’s total is currently 1,000,092,220 – and it’s still increasing by just over 1m Spotify streams a day – enough for it to be number 69 on the global Spotify chart on 12th August – over 9 months since the movie came out.

There are 2 versions of ‘Let me in your heart again’, the figure that has been added here is just the remix version. There is another version which has 4.1 million streams. Also ‘Forever’, which now has over 8 million streams. These are both taken from the Queen ‘Forever’ album.

Queen is nr 6 on the IFPI global artist chart for 2018.
