What has been said for the previous album was even more true by 2014 – the overall weakness make it much easier to dominate for acts with many fans. Well, that’s true as long as you do not offer 500 million iTunes users before issuing the physical record only one month later. But guess what, iTunes have never been a big deal in France.
If this widespread free digital release completely killed Songs Of Innocence in the US, in France it was ironically the first U2 album to held the #1 more than one week since The Joshua Tree. Singles failed to maintain the album high on charts, hurting final sales that climbed to 170,000 units by the end of 2015, the band weakest seller of their career.
