We often have the illusion that a big selling artist sell well because, well, because he is a big selling artist. As shown by both Sade or Enya that’s just not true. As big as you may be, you will always need hits to get successful albums. A Day Without Rain was a superb seller not only because of Enya popularity but yet thanks to the huge hit Only Time was.
Among the lessons learned category, to see both N Sync Bye Bye Bye and Phoenix If I Ever Feel Better almost tied is also very telling. The former was a terrific hit upon release, the latter was unknown. Even in their native country France, Phoenix hit only peaked at #12 with the album stopping its way at #90. Still, some 15 years later, it is one of the most remembered song in the world.
The fact both Toploader and Bloodhound Gang are up there show that artist name isn’t mandatory to be remembered either. Their songs feature into an heavy amount of playlists and as a result perform incredibly well despite pages of their respective acts are rarely visited.
