The story began with Viva La Vida by Coldplay and saw extended reigns from Human by The Killers and Shape of You by Ed Sheeran — both holding the crown for over 1,000 days. Shape of You was the first to surpass both 2 billion (December 10, 2018) and 3 billion streams (December 22, 2021). Blinding Lights by The Weeknd pushed past 4 billion on January 12, 2024, and looks set to hit 5 billion during 2025.

Today, more than 2,500 tracks have crossed the 500 million mark. The milestone has become more common—but staying within the top 1,000 has never been more competitive.

This approach changes the picture significantly. Save Your Tears, Die For You, and Despacito each have two versions with over a billion streams. Combined, they climb much higher than in traditional rankings.

How does this ranking work? Here’s the breakdown.

Each day, we analyze hundreds of thousands of tracks to measure how each one performs compared to others released around the same period. This lets us identify songs gaining traction well above their typical trend.

To make the list, a track must be streaming at least 50% faster than usual. You’ll see this in the “Pace” column: a value of 150% means the song is performing 1.5 times better than expected. A pace of 400% indicates four times its baseline activity.

Only songs that are at least three years old are included. Newer releases don’t yet have enough stable data—they’re still building visibility.

Most featured tracks are five to ten years old, often pushed by renewed artist exposure or viral moments on platforms like TikTok. If a pre-2000 song appears with a pace above 150%, it’s a strong signal that something unusual is happening. Its long-term baseline is shifting in real time.

One technical note: we use the release year of the album or compilation a track appears on. So if an ’80s song gained traction via a 2005 compilation, it will be listed as a 2005 release.
