France Album Sales: Rihanna

ANTI (2016) Era

After dropping seven albums in seven years, Rihanna took a break of over three years before releasing ANTI in 2016. Well, hiatus years for Rihanna are still years of hits. In 2013, she topped the Single Chart for three weeks as a featured artist to Eminem smash The Monster. In 2014, she paired this time with Shakira to record Can’t Remember To Forget You, a #5 peaking song. In 2015, this time her partners were Kanye West and Paul McCartney on her FourFiveSeconds successful comeback track, a #2 hit. 2015 was a busy year as a few months later Bitch Better Have My Money went #3 and four more songs reached the Top 100.

This messy period with an heavy amount of singles but no parent album released is someway an indicator of what’s coming in future years as streaming era is making albums not so relevant. Her proper comeback was ultimately released in 2016. It all started with the hit Work, featuring Drake, which became the artist sixth #1 song with two weeks at the top.

Work dropped faster than her previous lead singles yet and as no new hit took over, ANTI album is struggling at the moment, partially due to the unusual release that saw it available for streaming and free download before the street date. Peaking at #6, the album is down to #118 by its 17th week, selling 38,000 copies up to date with an estimated 50,000 units shipped. While those results are disappointing as of now, with singles that add for an unreal total of 1,430 weeks charted within’ 11 years, Rihanna already proved one can hardly doubt of her ability to rebound so only time can tell what will happen!
