France Album Sales: Rihanna
Good Girl Gone Bad (2007) Era
Thanks to the solid success of A Girl Like Me era, most people under 25 were already familiar with Rihanna name. With the upcoming Good Girl Gone Bad era, it was pretty much everyone that was going to become familiar with the young rising star.
Umbrella, the lead single featuring Jay-Z, came out in July 2007 as a physical single. It debuted and peaked at #6. This statistic doesn’t give the song the full credit of its success as it was in reality released two months earlier, peaking at #3 in the Digital Chart and enabling Good Girl Gone Bad to debut at #15 on 6,702 physical sales. During the complete summer period the album remained firmly inside the Top 50 along with Shut Up And Drive radio rotations. This single wasn’t charted in the official chart since it wasn’t issued as a physical single, but it went #24 in the Digital Chart.
If Rihanna was getting bigger and bigger, that’s Don’t Stop The Music was ended to make her a real star in France. Debuting at #1 and remaining there for two weeks, once again physical formats do not give the song justice in terms of success. Indeed, this hit was a gigantic 12 weeks #1 in the Digital Chart, boosting the album close to its initial peak at #16 with various weeks Top 25 during the fourth quarter. During its seven months of availability in 2007, Good Girl Gone Bad sold 129,300 physical units and close to 5,000 downloads. A Girl Like Me also sold copies here and there during the entire year, adding 24,900 to its tally, bringing its total up to 138,000 units with digital sales.
Promotion of the current album was anything but over still. In January 2008, Hate That I Love You was a #16 single, maintaining the long playing record inside the Top 100 for several months. In May the set went down due to the upcoming Deluxe Edition that contained a second CD with remixes and the new track Cry. This package boosted the album from #141 to #43.
A new Reloaded was going to be released in early September with new songs Take A Bow, Disturbia and If I Never See Your Face Again with Maroon 5. The former was aired from July, sustaining the interest on the original album although Take A Bow wasn’t on it. This hit peaked at #12 and rocketed the album to #8 once the Reloaded edition was issued. Up to her third album and that one being up to its 68th week, this was the very first time Rihanna reached the Album Chart Top 10.
Sixth single Disturbia also contributed to this peak as the song was starting to take off on radio. One more notable smash, when released this hit peaked at #3. During 2008, Good Girl Gone Bad sold an overall total of 154,000 copies, some 288,000 since release.
But it was still not over! A seventh single came out in early 2009, Rehab. Not a big hit with a #30 peak on Digital front, the song still helped the album to be Top 40 during the first few weeks of the new year, selling 26,000 during the first semester of 2006.
