Best selling artists, albums and singles of all-time

It has been over 2 years since I introduced to you the Commensurate Sales to Popularity Concept, nicknamed CSPC, in March 2016. This revolutionary concept enables to define accurately the most successful artists ever. During this timeframe I, with the precious help of Hernan Lopez and Anthony Blanchard, studied nearly 100 artists, 1,000 albums plus countless singles and stand-alone tracks worth a gigantic 8,5 billion equivalent album sales combined!

Many of you praised the effort and the ongoing results which really makes us feel great about the website. One recurrent negative feedback though has been the difficulty to navigate the blog. One unique, cross-artist source of data was needed. While I can advise you to use the search function at the top-right, which works really well, an article grouping together the main data is definitely a positive improvement. So, here it is, please say hi to the Data Collector!

This article lists various rankings, with more added frequently, please see the summary on page 2. Top selling singles / albums / artists, per format, per year, per artist type, etc… everything is possible!

Thanks to this Data Collector it isn’t necessary anymore to repeat the comprehensive rankings at the end of each article. It will solve an issue by removing some pages and letting you reach always the same final pages for all acts – CSPC totals, the artist’s singles ranking and their records & achievements. This article will be kept updated which will also prevent us from having lists updated at different moments here and there.

Anthony will handle the updates of this thread from now on and try to answer your questions the best he can. We won’t be answering to lists requests on comments though as it will be impossible to maintain them. Instead, when you request something, and if it is relevant for many people, we will add a page to the article with the said list.

It’s amazing to see how Justin is one of the youngest i think is the youngest on the list if i’m not mistaken and that he has managed to have such an impact on sales since his debut is amazing, haven’t seen someone from his generation have that kind of impact yet

Bob Dylan made probably the biggest record deal ever. Dylan sold all his 600 songs. Transaction was made with Universal company. The contract is worth several million dollars. 300-450 $ million according Rolling Stone magazine. Prior to this, Dylan received an offer from investment company worth 400 million dollars.

BILLBOARD 15.12.2020
Last week’s sale of Bob Dylan’s publishing catalog to Universal Music may have set a couple records. The price is thought to be between 370-400 million dollar, based on the 11-14 million dollar Dylan’s catalog generates every year.
Dylan could also have another deal in his future that’s half as big. Dylan own’s all of master recording. When it is , Dylan could also sell these rights, worth another 200 milion dollar, according to standard industry valuations.

could anyone possibly tell me billy joel’s biggest CSPC songs

I know she’s hardly a « best-selling » artist but what do we know about Yma Sumac’s sales ? She’s said to have sold millions across the world in the 50s and, though it’s far from the truth, she must have sold a couple of records.

Fanofpop

Hey now that the streaming tool is premium, some artists get updated less frequently?

Like rihanna hasn’t been updated in almost two weeks. Is there a way that you can run a refresh on all the artists once a month or something just so nobody gets too far behind?

MJD

Hi Fanofpop!

Luckily, there are still enough searches to get most relevant artists updated daily, except DJs that our readers show no love for 🙂

The Rihanna issue was the same one I explained under Mariah Carey’s article with a different lead-orphan split between the old and the new tool. Now all numbers fit with the appropriate share of the new tool so numbers get updated again in this EAS list!

JONIJUSUS

I noticed on the list by twitter you guys still have couple more artists to study. Could you reveal do you have any new artists who´s album sales you are working on?

MJD

Hi JONIJUSUS, the next ‘new’ artist to be published will be Van Halen, their numbers are completed at about 70/75% at the moment!

Innocent_Eyes

If you are interested, I’ve created a thread in this forum which includes the Australian figures reported in Billboard between 1970 and 1989: https://australian-charts.com/forum.asp?todo=viewthread&id=65911&pages=

You probably are already aware of this data but in case you’re not, you can use it (btw I know it may not be the appropriate article to post this comment. I wanted to post it in the Receipts Database article but I couldn’t find the comments’ section in this article)

MJD

Thank you IE! I still have various files to add into the Receipts Database, I’ll definitely add these numbers as well, great job!
