Best selling artists, albums and singles of all-time

It has been over 2 years since I introduced to you the Commensurate Sales to Popularity Concept, nicknamed CSPC, in March 2016. This revolutionary concept enables to define accurately the most successful artists ever. During this timeframe I, with the precious help of Hernan Lopez and Anthony Blanchard, studied nearly 100 artists, 1,000 albums plus countless singles and stand-alone tracks worth a gigantic 8,5 billion equivalent album sales combined!

Many of you praised the effort and the ongoing results which really makes us feel great about the website. One recurrent negative feedback though has been the difficulty to navigate the blog. One unique, cross-artist source of data was needed. While I can advise you to use the search function at the top-right, which works really well, an article grouping together the main data is definitely a positive improvement. So, here it is, please say hi to the Data Collector!

This article lists various rankings, with more added frequently, please see the summary on page 2. Top selling singles / albums / artists, per format, per year, per artist type, etc… everything is possible!

Thanks to this Data Collector it isn’t necessary anymore to repeat the comprehensive rankings at the end of each article. It will solve an issue by removing some pages and letting you reach always the same final pages for all acts – CSPC totals, the artist’s singles ranking and their records & achievements. This article will be kept updated which will also prevent us from having lists updated at different moments here and there.

Anthony will handle the updates of this thread from now on and try to answer your questions the best he can. We won’t be answering to lists requests on comments though as it will be impossible to maintain them. Instead, when you request something, and if it is relevant for many people, we will add a page to the article with the said list.

can you guys please update Lana Del Rey and Selen Gomez’s sales?

Nathan Abramson

I’ve been on here for yeeeaaarssss (you know that)

The last big questions or “Mysteries” as far as HUGE SELLERS are:

  1. Eric Clapton (and everything he’s done with Cream, Blind Faith, etc….)
  2. Frank Sinatra
  3. Genesis (to see where Phil Collins lines up)

Love your work and hope to see at least one of these in 2021!
Cheers

Be Well in the ” New Normal”

Hey guys!

Looks like Britney’s numbers were finally updated after 3 weeks or so, but her “streams EAS” and total only grew by 3k in that time frame when her streams are actually getting better. (On this page you can still see her numbers from 01/29/21: https://chartmasters.org/2020/05/cspc-mass-update-streaming/)

How is this possible? Is it a glitch or..? Thanks for the answer in advance!

justiceforglory

Sorry, while I was commenting there was another update (on both pages), but she’s still only at +8k since the end of January, while artists with similar streaming stats gain more in a few days. Something is not adding up. Sorry if I am wrong, but can you give an answer please? Thanks!

MJD

Hi justiceforglory!

When numbers are stuck, it’s usually because one day data was saved with some songs duplicated, and data gets saved again when organic / real streams have catch up the inflated figure. So it’s not the new figure that is too low but the one from late January that was too high!

Kris

Hey chartmasters staff, how come many of the artists’ streaming column hasn’t been updated in a month or two? I thought that was automatic?

MJD

Hi Kris! It’s automatic when someone searches for the artist. For some, few people are interested. For example, Michael Buble’s figure was 1 month old (Jan 17) because nobody searched for him with the tool in a month. I looked him up and it got updated. If the count of an artist doesn’t change even when people search for them, that will be due to inconsistant data detected, in general it happens when the new figure is lower than the old one. Two main reasons for this situation to happen: 1) a song or more have been removed from the… Read more »

Why does Rihanna keep fluctuating between 97m and 98m. Two days ago she was 98m now 97m. Is it because of orphan?

MJD

Does she? I do not check the list often enough to notice it, in her savings history it seems everything is in line. Can you check a few consecutive days and notify me when it happens so that I check the current data immediately? Thanks!

Fanofpop

Hey MJD, Rihanna hasn’t been updated for like a week but today she was and back to 97m

As in today after being updated.
Thank you for checking and all your hard work in keeping this so accurate.

Fanofpop

Also it’s getting close between Rihanna/Coldplay/Taylor will you do an update to let us know who gets it first?

MJD

Hi Fanofpop! Ok, I’ve now understood how it was possible! Here are saved Rihanna figures for the last pair of weeks. You can see that 3 times the number went down by nearly 800 million. Our scripts control a total doesn’t go down before saving the data. These controls are applied on lead streams through, and that’s why it messes the situation of Rihanna: she has 1 feature that fails to pop up in her last from time to time, but her leads are complete. After checking the numbers, it appears the ‘guilty’ is Wild Thoughts. So the valid figure… Read more »

Eric Clapton is big in Japan. In fact biggest foreign artist as a live performer. 94 sold out Budokan show. 210 show overall in Japan. Udo gave an award for archievements. Mr Udo is most important person in business. One can quickly conclude that “slowhand” has sold 3 m tickets in Japan. Also has three over million sales album in Japan. 2008 mjd recieved 130 million albums for Clapton.

Jake

3 million is low.

MJ sold 10 million in Japan and sold out Tokyo Dome 21x,more than any other artist.

But it’s only 1 million tickets. E.Clapton sold out Tokyo Dome many times too. Budokan normal capacity is 12000-13000 persons.

Jeffery Lebowski

How is Def Leppard not on this? PRYOMANIA and HYSTERIA alone!

Dan

Haven’t been studied yet.
