France Album Sales: Whitney Houston
My Love Is Your Love (1998) Era
The most amazing thing on Whitney Houston career results in France is the way she often did well in spite of registering sub-par debuts. We can look at it both ways. From one side, she failed to conquer a real fan base in the country. From the other side, she managed to recapture from scratch a new public with each album.
My Love Is Your Love debuted at #14 and although it was #6 the following week, it was still disappointing for a proper studio album. Of course the debut looks great considering The Preacher’s Wife flop but this movie was so much overlooked in France that most people though My love Is Your Love was The Bodyguard follow up album. The lead single was the #5 hit duet When You Believe with Mariah Carey. Failing to conclude into a big debut, at least this success kept the album inside the Top 20 during the Christmas season, selling 145,000 units in 1998.
Heartbreak Hotel was a solid hit in March 1999 too, going to #7 and sending the album from #49 to #18 within’ a month. By July, the album was up to 38 consecutive weeks inside the Top 75, a notable result but still limited to only one week inside the Top 10.
The title track was then released as the third single. It goes on to show how much misleading chart peaks may be. The song peaked at #10, lower than the previous two singles. My Love Is Your Love was much more convincing still as it rocketed the album 62-47-42-29-28-15-7-3-4-3-2-2. This was definitely the era of divas as this set was blocked by Au Coeur Du Stade live album by Celine Dion. My Love Is Your Love longplay retained a Top 25 placing until January 2000. It closed 1999 as a 2xPlatinum album representing 600,000 units shifted. With 2000 sales, the album reached 670,000 copies.
