France Album Sales: Michael Jackson

Off The Wall (1979) Era

By the release of his first solo album as an adult, Michael Jackson was already up to 13 US Top 10 hits all together, including 5 chart toppers. In France everything was still to be done as he charted with virtually nothing prior to 1979.

In that year this situation finally got fixed. The irony is that Off The Wall wasn’t the megastar’s breakthrough album in the country, that reward went to his album wit The Jacksons titled Destiny instead. In April, the single Shake Your Body was the first hit of him to truly gain rotation, followed by Blame It On The Boogie, pushing the album to #3 in the International Chart posted by VSD Magazine. The record lasted nine consecutive weeks inside the chart’s Top 5. As sales on that ranking were rather low, that was enough for only 60,000 copies for the year.

Off The Wall’s lead single Don’t Stop Til’ You Get Enough gained ground late into 1979, enabling the album to chart inside January’s monthly ranking at #25. The album sold about 30,000 units in the process, a similar amount that both The Jacksons and Triumph albums with his brothers sold.
