France Album Sales: Lady Gaga
Cheek To Cheek (2014) Era
Recording a string of #1 hits during the first half of the 50s, Tony Bennett gained legend status for very long among the American songbook. Turning 90 next month, nobody was expecting him to record an entire duet album with one of the most hyped pop stars, Lady Gaga.
Considering the downward spiral the young diva was facing, the very low appeal of US Jazz music in France and the status of old unknown guy of Tony Bennett in this country the anticipation was nowhere near the one of her previous records.
Thus, selling nearly 6,000 units in its first week at #9, mostly to die hard fans, was quite respectable already. Plus, despite the 9-29 fall in its second week, the more adult-oriented music enabled the album to held better than expected during the Christmas season as it remained 13 weeks inside the Top 100, surprisingly five more than Artpop. With more than 30,000 copies sold, if this album hasn’t increase much the overall tally of Lady Gaga, it can still be regarded as a positive note on her trajectory.
