France Album Sales: Jean-Jacques Goldman
Minotaire (1982) Era
As his label once again refused the artist aimed album title – Minoritaire (translated Minority), Jean-Jacques Goldman second albums came out with only the singer name within’ the cover.
After a promising start thanks to Il Suffira D’Un Signe, the promotion around Minotaire was already much improved from the previous era. The lead single was Quand La Musique Est Bonne issued in late 1982. The track was an instant-smash topping most unofficial rankings and selling over 500,000 units in the process. As surprising as it may seem that was still not enough to settle for good a LP record in France, especially during the busiest season of the year at Christmas.
This album had more to serve though. In early 1983, second single Comme Toi was released. One more massive hit, the song reached Gold status, representing half a million copies shipped, even before Quand La Musique Est Bonne despite the latter release. This time the public could do nothing else than respond positively to the album. In March 1983 chart, the record debuted at #7 in unofficial monthly ranking. It remained inside the Top 10 for a consecutive seven months helped by third single Au Bout De Mes Rêves which was one more monster hit.
With the album selling more than 500,000 units by the end of 1984, Jean-Jacques Goldman climb from being nobody to reach the heights of French music industry was outstanding.
Impressively giving the amount of hits the artist managed during his immaculate career, all three singles from this album feature today at #4, #5 and #10 among his most played hits on YouTube, all of them with more than 5 million streams within’ the last two years.
