France Album Sales: Jean-Jacques Goldman

En Passant (1997) Era

In spite of being busy with his trio works, Jean-Jacques Goldman hadn’t released a new solo song in 10 years when En Passant came out.

Singles were now truly secondary for the artist with most of them being at best limited released. On Ira, arguably the most popular song from this era, hasn’t even enter the Top 100 Singles Chart.

The real popularity indicator ends up being the Album Chart. En Passant debuted unsurprisingly at #1. Despite strong competition, it remained firmly at the top during 7 weeks, the artist fifth consecutive studio album to do at least that well.

If the album failed to held as well as its predecessors after the Christmas rush, it is only because initial anticipation and releases awareness massively increased by that point, accelerating the sales process for confirmed artists. As a result, En Passant shot to 3xPlatinum, 900,000 units, after a mere four months on the market. By March 1998 the album went Diamond, his fastest to date to break the million level. Subsequent singles maintained the album on charts for 78 weeks, completing the decade on 1,3 million sales.

As usual, the studio album era was concluded with a live set, Tournée 98 En Passant. As usual, the package debuted at #1 where it stood for four weeks and selling 310,000 units for the year.

In 2000, a compilation of his Fredericks Goldman Jones years came out, Pluriel. One more #1 set, this package moved slightly more than 200,000 units.
