France Album Sales: Celine Dion

PART III: THE MADNESS 1995-1999

D’Eux (1995) Era

In total, Celine Dion definitely sold a huge amount of albums in 1994. It was as much due to heavy release schedule as to success yet considering none of her albums went Top 3 and none made it into the Year End Top 50. Thus, one can’t say D’Eux was massively anticipated although there was obviously much more curiosity for this album than for her previous sets.

One factor that notably boosted this curiosity is Jean-Jacques Goldman, arguably the most successful French artist of all-time who wrote and produced most of this album for Celine Dion. The French artist gave her two songs that were going to be bigger than anything ever released in French, Pour Que Tu M’Aimes Encore and Je Sais Pas. The first song was an unreal 12 weeks #1, 25 weeks Top 3, 30 weeks Top 10. The second song was a just as unreal 7 weeks #1 knowing it was launched when the album was up to 1,6 million copies.

Both singles pushed the album to #1 week after week. During the entire year, the set prevented tons of major releases to make it to the top, selling an historical 3 million units while no other album ever sold even 2 million copies within’ a calendar year. The run of the album was concluded with an absurd tally of 44 weeks at #1, an all-time record, including 35 in 1995.

What’s more, Celine Dion catalog got obviously boosted by the unprecedented success. During 1995 her previous albums sold the estimated numbers detailed below.

1990 Unison  – 30,000
1991 Dion Chante Plamondon  – 120,000
1993 Celine Dion – 25,000

1995 Les Premières Chansons Vol 1 – 70,000

An impressive total of 645,000 units outside of D’Eux sales, plus a few more copies for her earlier 80s recordings available in France.
