The Show Must Go On! Deeply impacted by tragic deaths of her lifetime husband René Angelil and one of her brothers, Celine Dion released this Friday, May 20 2016, a cover of cult Queen hit. A few days later on May 24, Encore Un Soir, a proper new single was launched and has already shot to #1 on iTunes. The upcoming French album is already poised to do wonders during the second half of 2016.
It is a secret to no one the singer from Québec has been incredibly popular in France. Even so, she has been even more than that. Two decades ago she was just bigger than Earth. In 1995, she spent 35 weeks at #1 of the album chart. In 1996, 21 weeks. In other words during a period as long as a two years span she has been at the top for more than half of the weeks, not even mentioning how many weeks she had with two albums inside the Top 10 together, and three inside 1996 Top 10 year end chart.
Sales-wise, to give some perspective to her results, just know that her D’Eux album alone sold in nine months more copies than the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead or Shakira in their entire careers and almost as much as Coldplay and Muse. This complete madness saw its dimension naturally diminished with time, but the success never left Celine Dion still. After more than 20 years at the top, she accumulated an insane amount of albums sold in France – the question is, how much?
During the next pages we will be reviewing her complete discography to see how high she went in France. Please be aware all Spotify figures refer to worldwide streaming as they only aim to display which albums still have strong catalog hits as of now. Let’s go!
