France Album Sales: AC/DC

The Razors Edge (1990) Era

Do you know what Aerosmith and Bon Jovi had in common apart from being US rock bands? In 1986, Bon Jovi exploded with their gigantic Slippery When Wet. In 1987, Aerosmith made a huge comeback with Permanent Vacation. In 1988, Bon Jovi confirmed the try with New Jersey. So did Aerosmith in 1989 with Pump. All those albums, one per year, ultimately sold over 5 million units in the US. The common point is named Bruce Fairbairn, the genius producer of all those albums.

Aerosmith were on a hole as big as AC/DC before 1987 when they recruited Bruce Fairbairn, who revived the band in a big way. The aussie band AC/DC thus decided to test the same medicine, hiring Bruce Fairbairn to record their 1990 album The Razors Edge. Guess what? This album sold over 5 million units in the US thanks to the big hit Moneytalks, which at #23 remains their biggest US Hot 100 single, and the massive lead single Thunderstruck, two songs which undeniably contained the fingertips of their producer.

In other countries the return to form wasn’t as impressive but still The Razors Edge was a strong improvement from its three predecessors, putting hte band on the good way again. In France, the album peaked at #29 but charted for 20 weeks inside the Top 50 including the entire 1990 Christmas season. This run was concluded on 130,000 sales, their first Gold record since 1983.
