Wow we really are witnessing something historic here. "They are also the best selling boy band of all-time, topping the Backstreet Boys, and are months away until they top Coldplay to become the biggest group to debut in the last 35 years. Yes, they are that big."
I grew up during the backstreet boys and remember how massive that was, and BTS just blew by them.
they did not add 30m, MJD says they added 14m. the sharp increase is because of two things:
- the streaming formula was changed where Youtube and Chinese streams are weighted stronger therefore bumping BTS' total way up
- Many side albums and DVD's sales weren't included before but were just added this time around
A few articles in the media claiming that they are bigger/more successful than The Beatles in the 60s and Michael Jackson in the 80s. Not sure that I subscribe to this view but it would make an interesting comparison?
Hey MJD, what is your plan regarding the solo efforts of the band members and how/if they'll be included in BTS' total numbers?
For example, Charlie Puth's very recent song only had Jung Kook from the band sing on the song, yet it was still credited as a BTS song and thus the song's streams were included for BTS instead of Jung Kook (who didn't make the artist chart).
In this instance, do you guys plan on excluding these streams from BTS' units? Or will they be included since Spotify already does it?
How does BTS sold 3.300.000 copies of "Proof" in one week ? The other sources give much lower data .
Hi Denysanatol!
The 3.3m figure is estimated shipment for it. We kept the estimate here at the lower end since there's no Gaon figure yet.
Hi Finwion!
While total units of BTS as a franchise will be interesting to follow, we will definitely exclude sales and streams of tracks from solo members on their own total.
There are differences though. Some solo tracks don’t have BTS credit while others do. They must have a reason for it. Why aren’t you including it? There’s a difference between solo works from their solo mixtapes/albums and solo songs to solo songs with BTS credit. If you see, almost every solo song that has the BTS credit is due to swap deals. (Halsey did BWL with them and then Suga/BTS did Suga’s Interlude in her album; Juice Wrld did All Night with BTS and then Suga/BTS did Girl Of My Dreams for his album). Like, it doesn’t make sense including for example, Jhope’s new song “More” in BTS numbers. But it makes sense to include collabs where BTS are credited.
Haven't seen any article claiming such, a few compared BTS' success to that of Beatles in the 60s but haven't read one where they claimed that the Korean act is a much bigger phenomenon than the Fab Four
hi, I saw that here you described that the group is now on hiatus, and that is not entirely correct, it would be more accurate to say that they are on a break from the musical part of the group so that each one can explore and show their colors as soloists, however they will still continue doing other activities not related to new music as a group
They are really successful but dont have a iconic Hit like „I want it that way“ or „Wannabe“.
Hi Jeani! BTS has a slew of Korean hits, but in the United States and the rest of the world, they're best known for Dynamite, Butter, and Permission to Dance which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Hey I was hoping why BTS Japanese discography sales not included. I thought it was orphan but orphan is only 1m sales. BTS the best, Face Yourself and MOTS Journey have sold like 2.5m units also where is Young Forever
Sales of their JP releases are included among compilations. None of them are regarded as studio releases though as they have many tracks already on KR albums. Their sales are therefore distributed across these.
