The truth about Britney Spears’ album sales in Asia

Southeast Asia – INDONESIA

I won’t be telling you anything new if I tell you that the Indonesian culture is closer to Indian culture than the one of the US or Japan. It is more open to western products than India though, with artists becoming big in the Philippines. Some even breaking records there too such as Westlife. A massively populated country, it also had a massive music market with 83 million albums sold in 1995. This was more than in Brazil, Mexico or Canada. Unlike many Asian markets, the one of Indonesia didn’t tumble in full in the late 90s. The result was a still solid 36,2 million albums sold in 2003.

It seems teen pop was unstoppable there by the end of the 90s given Britney‘s figures are phenomenal.

Merging all the data together concludes on the following album sales to date:

  • Baby One More Time – 325,000
  • Oops!… I did It Again – 245,000
  • Britney – 180,000
  • In The Zone – 160,000
  • Greatest Hits, My Prerogative – 135,000
  • Blackout – 20,000
  • Circus – 25,000
  • The Singles Collection – 10,000
