France Album Sales: Eminem

The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) Era

Shortly after breaking a few radio track lists, Eminem was already back in April 2000 with a new single, The Real Slim Shady, the leading extract of May album The Marshall Mathers LP.

During a very competitive summer, The Real Slim Shady became the artist first Top 10 in France, peaking at #6 and lasting ten weeks in the region. It was also his first Top 10 in the US and first #1 in the UK, this new song significantly increased the profile of Eminem. The main evidence of that was the run of The Marshall Mathers LP. It debuted at #28 prior the single explosion and then thanks to that one entered the Top 10 five weeks later and peaked at #2 on its weeks 13 to 15 behind Moby album Play.

The lead single gave the album 23 weeks inside the Top 30 including 14 weeks Top 10 but by the end of October its job was completed. Just when The Marshall Mathers LP was going to leave the aforementioned Top 30, second single gave it wings. The single was Stan featuring Dido, a #4, 13 weeks Top 10 hit during the holyday season. The album went all the way back up to #6 and retained a Top 30 placing until March, a total of 41 consecutive weeks. In the meantime, the album had reached 600,000 units in early February. It slowed down from that point as I’m Back flopped (#49) but was still over 700,000 by the end of the year.

Obviously, results of this album helped the previous The Slim Shady LP to sell additional copies. This record even entered the Album Chart at #62 in September 2000, some 18 months after release. In January it topped this mark at #52. With 35,000 sales in 2000 and 25,000 in 2001, this set was up to 80,000 units by that point.
