Hi Elías!

It's a good point and we've had this conversation ourselves at the very beginning, and purposedly went by streaming only in order to split compilation sales.

To be fair, using downloads is very acceptable as well, and it would have been good to use both. We went by streaming only because results are in general very similar (this will get less true with time), and estimating download sales, especially for the weakest songs, is less accurate than using streaming numbers. It felt like adding a part of inaccuracy to the calculation, rather than improving it. Now, we developped fairly strong methods to estimate downloads, so it would be more doable than some years ago, although it's is handier to just go by streaming.

Using physical sales is a big no-go to me yet. Their sales do not reflect the big singles, instead some market mechanics. Lead singles always sold much more than the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc single, it doesn't mean they supported sales of compilations stronger later on. It's worst with singles of Soundtracks from popular singers, they sold a lot precisely because there were no parent album, not because they were so strong. Imagine considering A Groovy Kind of Love as Phil Collins' main compilation sales driver, Who's That Girl ahead of Material Girl, or I Just Can’t Stop Loving You as bigger than Smooth Criminal or The Way You Make Me Feel.

You say that but post malone gets more daily streams than billie and had a sold out tour. The reality is both are still very successful but had eras that were WAY too massive and that's hard to consistently sustain

His decline in streaming has been huge. I think he might be having trouble trying to figure out a new sound that connects with old and new fans. But the fact that he will have two 20 million+ albums in a few years is super impressive (and in back to back years, 2018 and 2019) and shows that he really was the "it" guy during that short period.

But if they are bigger and the other songs have not caught up since, then it is not simply “considering” it is the actual result.

After all, look at Olivia Newton John, her soundtrack songs are bigger than her studio hits.

Great background image. I'm sure you may be interested in other variants of sales graph images that will betray a more presentable look. And thus can attract the audience.

ONJ is not that good of an example since one of her biggest hits is physical

he really flopped with his last 2 albums. a big drop in todays streaing era.
but he got a reat year in 2024 so far - with Fortnight and I Had Some help both being 1 Hits, maybe his upcoming album will reverse his popularity back to how it was in 2018-2020
