France Album Sales: Bruno Mars

Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010) Era

January 29 2011.  This was the ranking date that saw the album Doo-Wops & Hooligans debut in France. It was also the date of rules changes in France as digital sales got allowed that day on both Singles and Albums charts. Another change that wasn’t concerning Bruno Mars initially but did impact him ultimately was that catalog albums got allowed anew into the main album chart.

So what happened chart-wise on that date? In the singles side – apart from Fuck You hit by Cee-Lo Green debuting at #81 months after its peak due to physical unavailability – Bruno Mars had two singles debuting. First was his lead single, Just The Way You Are, at #37. The song was in reality already slowing down but it was one more song not available in CD format, thus which wasn’t able to be featured inside the ranking until that date. In the Digital chart, the song actually peaked at #12 a few weeks earlier during a solid run. A second single was charting, Grenade. This one was still being promoted and increasing, it debuted at #13 and peaked at #7 one month later.

The album on its side started at #18, an already very good peak for an artist of this profile. Thanks to the first two singles, the record held very well during several months. By the end of June, after 22 weeks inside the Top 100 Doo-Wops & Hooligans was in danger of leaving it at #93. By then, it had sold 50,000 physical units and 10,000 downloads.

In early July, third single The Lazy Song took over by hitting #11 thanks to local promotion, the album responded as well climbing all the way to a new peak of #13. A last single, Marry You came out at the end of the year peaking at #51. The song had enduring appeal yet by charting as many as 56 weeks. By the end of the year, the album still hadn’t left the Top 100 after 49 weeks, this run represented 105,000 physical units and 15,000 digital sales.

In-between, Bruno Mars was featured on several additional hits to conclude the year on an incredible 8 proper singles, each ending their run with 16 weeks or more on charts.

During 2012, no more single got issued. This being said, all his songs continued to gain large airplay, sustaining the album very well. This later was incredibly stable as during the first 33 weeks of 2012 it remained charting between positions 78-138 every single week. Sales-wise Doo-Wops & Hooligans added 40,000 copies to its tally for the year.
