So the 1xP official certification don't tell anything for it was only 15k.

Why I only see multiple gold certifications instead of platinum?
Put the mouse in the gold discs and you'll read (in portuguese): Platinum, double platinum, etc . This new PMB website is terrible.
I think "Spice" has already reached 30 million CSPS, this needs an update 🔥
Hi! Very interesting page! Said that, in 2019 they toured the world to an IMPRESSIVE 700,000k tickets sold from just 13 dates, thsi means that they're not only remembered by now 30somethings, but they are still very much considered as iconic even from youngsters of this generation.
When you wrote this article figures were, yes, a bit low but i think they had a pretty good resurgence in these last 3 years, new GH album sales and Wannabe figures literally exploded taking it near the 460 million mark, while many others singles jumped too: Stop reached 70 million mark and other 3 singles are now well above the 50 million mark on Spotify. Even Headlines gained a bit, arriving at 2,4 million ahaha
I'd be very curious to see those data updated to find out the total CSPC for the 3 albums and the Greatest Hits.
The streaming numbers indicate that for the younger generation, the Spice Girls are very much a one-hit wonder. "Wannabe" is the song that lasted. The rest of the streaming numbers are quite poor compared to say the Backstreet boys, who also have one enormous hit (I want it that way) but then several other songs above 200 M or 100 M plays.
Sorry but i absolutely don't agree! A One hit wonder will never sell 700,000 tickets IN A HEARTBEAT like they did last summer, c'mon.
The super youngsters maybe just know Wannabe, that's true, but i can absolutely bet they can recognize they're just absolutely big and if they don't know other songs it's just cause they belong to a different generation and aren't particularly interested in hearing them.
I know Beatles, titles of the song (cause i'm very passionate about music) but i don't listen to them and i bet LOADS of youngsters will recognize some songs because they're still very played but maybe they don't know they're from the Beatles, and maybe they just know "Yellow Submarine", but i don't think that a sane human being can ever dispute their undeniably legend status.
And Spice Girls, believe it or not, were the only band that matched THAT phenomenon in terms of cultural impact and iconicity of its members, messages of the songs and so on.
But i have to admit that they are TERRIBLE in making their catalogue sell, that's true, they release just a single Greatest Hits back in 2007 and just in the latest months decided to release new vynils.. but nothing special. Not just a single unreleased collection or re-release of the first two albums with leftover songs.. and that's bad, cause they could have sold many more albums, and if only they weren't lazy as they are, they could still make numbers and maybe appeal even to youngsters. Of course not like a new artist can do, this can't happen, but they ARE legends and people of all ages know it.
I'm waiting for them to release their animated movie next year, probably, that will contain some of their hits and PROBABLY NEW SONGS. Going to the cinemas is the perfect way for a comeback in a big way, and the best way to reach core fans as well as new ones, from kids to teenagers and so on! They have a great chance in their hands, i hope they could just make it work and finally release some more music.
How much would Spice and Spiceworld have sold on BMG and Britannia Music Clubs if you could extrapolate from the rest of their sales?
Hi Bruh,
There was no BMG music club in the UK. At one point there were numerous music clubs in the UK but all had folded by the late 90s, with only Britannia remaining, it eventually folded sometime around 2007. In all truth though, it had been dying a death from the turn of the century.
I do not have music club figures for Spiceworld but I have exact music club shipments for Spice, which are;
1996 --- 2,749
1997 --- 154,094
1998 --- 41,636
1999 --- 8,844
2000 --- 1,431
2001 --- 679
2002 --- 203
2003 --- 81
2004 --- 128
2005 --- 39
2006 --- 5
TOTAL --- 209,889
Thanks Martin.
Sorry, I made a mistake in my question. I meant BMG and Columbia House. I was asking about potentially lost US sales.
Thanks again.
Ho! This year will be the Spice Girls’ 25th! Can I suggest a new post with updated numbers?
And the sales for each solo spice maybe? I’m so curious!! 🙏
Think about it!
Anyway, love your site!
They're at number 99? that sounds wrong and very low, but at the same time it doesn't and I'll explain why. The fact is that most of the Spice Girls success and big global success was only based on 2 albums! They literally were only together as 5 for 2 years and only recorded 2 albums as a group of 5.
Spice Mania was mega explosive but very short lived. They perhaps could have lasted longer, but they were overworked, probably more than other big artists, they released Spice and Spice World within a year from each other or even less, made a movie at the same time, press and interviews were all over the place, merchandise and marketing for them was quite frankly a lot bigger than Britney Spears' or Backstreet Boys (they had the Spice World Playstation game, Polaroid camera among all the regular merchandise that is common among artists). Thus, global sales between 65 - 75 million of Spice and Spice World alone is not bad at all.
I mean Madonna and Mariah carey have made how many albums? over 8 each and all combined they have sold more or less 150 million. That goes to somewhat show the supernova success that the Spice Girls achieved in 2 years.
The Spice Girls success outside of the UK is downplayed and forgotten a lot, this also has to do because the music world and their fan base barely had a chance to mourn their split as a 5 member group. Many people forget but although Ginger Spice's departure from the group made front paper headlines around the world, the music industry was about to make one of its biggest explosions in history.
People forget that shortly after the Spice Girls disappeared from the media and the charts – due to Geri's departure – within a couple of months Madonna released Ray of Light the album, Britney Spears was about to release Baby One More Time, TLC made an extremely groundbreaking comeback with Fanmail, Destiny's Child followed up with their debut album, Christina Aguilera debuted Genie in a Bottle, Backstreet Boys finally made history within their own country with I Want it That Way (after only being huge outside of the USA for a long time) JLO had enormous success with her debut album, Ricky Martin had a massive explosion with Livin' La Vida Loca, Jessica Simpson, Sugar Ray, Eminem, Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, Missy Elliot were all smashing the charts. Literally in less than 5 months after Ginger Spice left, the music industry went crazy! 1999 was in my personal opinion the biggest musical year between 1998 - 2021 it was filled with huge new artists, the billboard charts were covered with huge hits after huge hits from all the artists and many more that I did not mention here, and the early 2000s still echoed the explosion of 1999. I mean it was big hits and big artists that are all now considered classics.
In conclusion, although the Spice Girls did make a huge impact in terms of records and popularity, their real fan base like myself were mostly young between 11-13 and the other half of fans were younger than 11 years old who quickly moved on to Britney Spears, BSB, Christina Aguilera and NSync. Literally, there was no mourning time for the Spice Girls, they were sadly and quickly forgotten and that even reflects on the low views in their videos on YouTube.
However, I will say to their defence and from a realistic point of view, that I am very confident that if YouTube and social media would have been around for the Spice Mania era, most of their songs and videos would be over 1 Billion views/streams and I dare to say Wannabe would be over 2 billion without any exaggeration. Once again people downplay their success now that they are not relevant, but a humble reminder to everyone that Wannabe reached #1 in over 33 countries! – I'm sorry but not even Britney's biggest success (baby one more time) when juxtaposing the success on the charts on a global scale. On average, huge hits reach a total of 12 -15 countries at #1. The only song since Wannabe was released to this day in 2021 to have almost beat Wannabe was Despacito by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee ft Justin Bieber.
Especiaria muito maior que Britney Spears e BSB? Ou você mora no Reino Unido (which would already be an overkill) ou é apenas um fã que não quer aceitar os fatos.
you can say whatever it is, but Baby One More Time was more resounding, both in numbers (5.33 x 5.05 million physical singles) and in the impact the music video made, the girls wanted to be Britney, the boys they wanted to have Britney, the parents wanted Britney as a daughter, the record companies wanted to have their Britney Spears. This was reflected in the album sales ( BOMT 24.2M X Spice 21.9M)
