39 years have passed since the release of Private Dancer, and we're all looking forward to get Tina Turner analyzed... by the way, for the first time.
Maybe you understand now better.
61st place. Her fans make out she's right at the top, but she's quite a long way down the list. Certainly much lower down than you'd expect after all those years, considering the hype.
“Quite a long way down the list”
“Considering the hype”
She is the top, the top performer of her generation. Music sales are effectively just merchandising now, only rabid fans buy them and streams are manipulated by Spotify (their own admission) lol
She's not the top performer of her generation (1998-2023), even if you were to give her the benefit of adding the Destiny's Child discography to her solo work, she'd still be well behind Eminem (around 50m) and Swift (around 30m), in that time frame.
If just looking at her solo career, numerous acts have performed better than her in a similar time frame (2003-2023), such as Drake, Adele, Rihanna, Swift, West etc.
From 2000 to today would you take Eminem, Swift and Adele as a popularity podium?
1st two yes. 3rd could be anyone from Coldplay, Rihanna, BTS, Drake, Sheeran or Adele, depending on how you judge or view things.
She's the top PERFORMER of her generation in the sense that that no one comes close to her when talking about singing, dancing and overall PERFORMING ability. Sales are are a different metrics.
That's purely a subjective point of view and completely unmeasurable. On top of this, this site is quite obviously dedicated to music sales etc and nothing to do with performing, singing and dancing.
Still the 10th best selling solo woman act of all time, according to this site. That to me is being successful.
Of course, no one is disputing that she's been extremely successful since she came on the scene. I was just highlighting that she wasn't the top performer (artist) of her generation, after Zane said she was.
Without Swift's streaming numbers I prioritize physical sales and Adele's are significantly higher considering the number of albums
Question: why is 4 total EAS higher than Self-titled, when Self-titled beats it in almost every metrics (studio albums, digital singles and streams)? 🙂 I just want to understand, no negative comment intended
Hi Elio!
Very well spotted, somewhat some orphan and features' download sales were linked to the self-titled inside our database. This has been fixed now and totals are inline again with the 5 metrics' total!
And I was pointing out that her being regarded as the “top” stage performer by fans and critics alike is not a fluke as seems to be suggested by OP. She’s also the top touring black artist of all time.
