Streaming Masters – Drake

Canadian rapper Drake is by far the most streamed artist globally right now. How enormous are his figures on Spotify? And what about YouTube?

CSPC articles require time to compile. It may be frustrating to wait for them too long, especially when various new artists, and even more and more catalog acts, enjoy the large majority of their sales through streaming only these days. To make sure to provide you much more frequent updates, we are going to publish Streaming Masters sheets from now on, detailing the complete streaming section of artists.

As detailed in the Fixing Log articleSpotify represents 157 million of the 272 million users of streaming platforms, while YouTube is pretty much the only video platform generating some revenue for the industry. Below is the equivalence set on the aforementioned article:

Audio Stream – 1500 plays equal 1 album unit
Video Stream – 11,750 views equal 1 album unit

Equivalent Albums Sales (EAS) = 272/157 * Spotify streams / 1500 + YouTube views / 11750

Drake has been named the most streamed artist of 2018. The hip-hop star
topped the list for both Spotify and Apple as the top streaming artist of the year,
earning 8.2 billion streams on Spotify.

He’s also been the most streamed artist on Apple Music every year since 2015, is the most streamed artist on the Apple Music platform, and is the first artist to cross 10 billion global streams on Apple Music.

2018 marks Drake’s third year as the most streamed artist on Spotify. He’s been Spotify’s most streamed artist every year since 2015 except 2017, where he came in as the second most-streamed artist behind Ed Sheeran.

I noticed that while other artists like Dua Lipa, Post Malone and Nicki Minaj had the “comprehensive audio streaming” tab in their tables, Drake distinctively doesn’t have that in his. Why is that and could it please be rectified?

The formula given above the streaming figures already shows how comprehensive streams are calculated based on Spotify. The EAS is based on the comprehensive numbers, but if we already have the formula it’s not necessary to show the extra column. (I’m paraphrasing what MJD has said before about this)

Hi 3012!

The template was recently changed to make it more readable. The comprehensive audio streaming was dropped because it’s a simple application of the formula mentioned, meaning Spotify x 272/157.

Okay, thanks. I just thought it showed the closest to the actual number of streams a song pulled on not just Spotify. Drake is a much bigger artist on Apple Music and I thought it’d be nice seeing those numbers also reflected, but since they’re already being accounted for, it’s cool.

Spotify published the list so i’m pretty sure it’s accurate.

Drake has gone a long way. From an unheard and uninteresting rapper ( cos I don’t even know any of his songs before Views album) to becoming the biggest (if not, second biggest) streaming artist in Spotify. And it’s really hard for non-American music artists to do well or break records on US Billboard records. Look at Celine Dion’s Hot 100 records. Nothing impressive and is way behind Mariah, Whitney and Madonna’s US Billboard records. Drake has been breaking a lot of US Billboard records in a short span of time and he deserves it. He made rap reign over… Read more »

Drake is a unique and charismatic live performer and obviously one of the several best selling artists who consistently sells well! That ongoing revising is very clever.I think when you get the last all time Icons finished this fall it will truly be the best reference guide on the planet for sales figures MJD!I know some of you have come from other places ( I think) such as UKMix( whatever happened to Basil, is he will you folks as well.I know he did a lot of sales work on FS in 2005 and beyond).Anyway your efforts are awesome and very appreciated… Read more »
