Shakira albums and songs sales

The football World Cup is currently flooding media from everywhere. No artist is more linked to this competition than Shakira. During each of the last 4 World Cups, she got a huge hit. Whenever, Wherever in 2002, Hips Don’t Lie in 2006, Waka Waka in 2010 and Dare (La La La) in 2014, we are left wondering if her new song Clandestino will take over the same one as these previous summer anthems.

Shakira

It wasn’t always easy for the Colombia superstar. She started with two anonymous albums, Magia and Peligro, when she was only a teenager. These two records will be ignored in this study as they hardly sold a thing and got removed from the market for decades on the demand of the artist herself. With her 1995’s third album Pies Descalzos Shakira hasn’t only got successful, she became massive, huge enough to cross over boundaries of Latin America. The fourth effort was so strong too that breaking the global audience was inevitable. This unstoppable rise to the top reached its peak with 2001’s set Laundry Service and it’s monster single Whenever, Wherever. Her first worldwide smash, not her last.

Her special nature makes harder to compare her success with the one of remaining pop stars. Shakira continues to release most of her material in Spanish along with English versions. Of course, as popular as she may be in Latin countries, those are still fairly weaker markets than English-speaking ones. So, when taking into account everything, how does she perform against the US / UK icons?

ChartMasters’ method: the CSPC

As usual, I’ll be using the Commensurate Sales to Popularity Concept (CSPC) in order to relevantly gauge the act’s results. It will not only bring you sales information for all albums, physical and download singles, as well as audio and video streaming. In fact, it will really determine the act’s popularity.

If you are not yet familiar with the CSPC method, below is a nice and short video of explaining the concept. I recommend watching it before reading on and to the sales figures. You’ll get the idea in just two minutes.

And if you want to know the full method as well as formulas, you can read the full introduction article.

Now let’s get into the artist’s detailed sales figures!

At almost 35 million over 9 albums, the average sales of Shakira albums isn’t among the very top ones. Obviously, we can’t ignore five of them where Spanish records yet. An interesting result is that those records haven’t sold that much less than the English ones. At 14,51 million, they stand up well against the 20,27 million units sold by the four English sets.

They are also more stable with all of them except the last one sitting between 2,6 million and 4,5 million units sold. This enables me to point out an element I rarely mentioned, the fact A-League artists have sales much more secured than one-time smash acts or B-League artists. In English-speaking countries or in Asia for example, Shakira belongs to the latter category. As a result, she needs big hits to benefit from the highest level of exposure. In Hispanic countries though, she is an A-League star, meaning she will be promoted at the highest possible scale no matter what. That’s how last Adele album 25 crushed albums from anyone else so effortlessly, because in our day and age she is the only global A-League artist.

We studied Enrique Iglesias previously, finding out his first two Spanish albums from mid-90s sold slightly more than 4 million units, making them some of the biggest Spanish albums ever. Shakira‘s first two did just about the same. Just like him, the turn of the century gave her the opportunity to confirm this status in the world. She did it incredibly well with Laundry Service. While she had various up and downs since, it feels like the Colombian star can still drop a giant smash anytime.

During the 90s, album sales were fairly healthy in Latin America but singles sales were almost non-existent. Most Shakira earlier singles only sold a few units. By the time Whenever, Wherever got issued, the North American market had collapsed too. This being said, she did wonders in Europe, selling almost 1 million units of that song in each France and Germany.

All together, Shakira sold close to 8,5 million physical singles. It surely doesn’t look that impressive. In reality, Whenever, Wherever is one of the very top selling post-2000 songs in this format. What’s more, Hips Don’t Lie is just as well placed among post-2005 songs. It isn’t all as very few songs released since 2010 can challenge Waka Waka in that field. Each of those three singles got historical sales in the format with their figures being limited only due to market constraints. Of course, when making those statements I’m not taking into account Japanese singles from artists like AKB48 which are very specific.

Just like with physical sales, Shakira is someway poorly represented by digital sales. English-speaking countries, most notably the US and the UK have been by very, very far the leading downloads markets along with South Korea. In these markets, among global stars of the last 15 years the diva is likely one of those who’s getting the lowest share of their sales there.

It doesn’t mean she hasn’t sold some downloads though, she clearly did, even getting as high as 11 million with the gigantic smash Hips Don’t Lie. In total, she is over 56 million downloads and ringtones in her lifetime.

Streaming Sales

saleelsol_wall

Streaming is made up of audio and video streams. Our CSPC methodology now includes both to better reflect the real popularity of each track. The main source of data for each avenue is respectively Spotify and YouTube. As detailed in the Fixing Log article, Spotify represents 157 million of the 272 million users of streaming platforms, while YouTube is pretty much the only video platform generating some revenue for the industry. Below is the equivalence set on the aforementioned article:

Audio Stream – 1500 plays equal 1 album unit
Video Stream – 11,750 views equal 1 album unit

Equivalent Albums Sales (EAS) = 272/157 * Spotify streams / 1500 + YouTube views / 11750

Streaming Part 1

A few days ago, I posted the CSPC article of Alanis Morissette. On it, I mentioned she still does well in streaming with 398,000 equivalent album sales for her juggernaut album Jagged Little Pill. Believe it or not, Shakira‘s Spanish album from the same era Dónde Están los Ladrones? is quite close from it at 352,000 units.

This is the illustration of how utterly massive it has been in the Spanish world. Very few catalog songs in foreign languages topped the 20 million mark at Spotify so far, yet as many as 6 did it from that album alone. Still not convinced? Those two Spanish records have as many 10+ million songs than Madonna‘s first 9 albums combined. The lowest album cut from the latter album is also over 5 million Spotify streams.

One more time, these figures show the relevance of the CSPC method. I mentioned during the previous pages how some formats weren’t favorable to Spanish-language recordings like physical singles and downloads since their main markets have never consumed a lot these products. The success is always translated somewhere though. Streaming works as the perfect compensation for them. Mexico and Brazil among others are becoming massive streaming markets thanks to their large penetration of internet and their huge populations. If on average they spend less money to buy records, they use much more YouTube and now audio streaming platforms.

Some intriguing fact to take off those mind-blowing results is how Dónde Están los Ladrones? crushes Pies Descalzos by almost 2 to 1 although they sold similar amounts of studio albums. We will be understanding why during the next pages.

Streaming Part 2

Unsurprisingly, Whenever, Wherever does even better than all songs from previous albums with a strong 134 million plays. Maybe more surprising is how well Underneath Your Clothes does and also how La Tortura tops everything else from Laundry Service. At 120 million streams on Spotify, the Spanish classic is fairly close from Whenever, Wherever.

The leading song out of this pack yet is quite easily Hips Don’t Lie. Up to 323 million, the song eclipses everything else from its parent album, representing nearly 90% of its total.

In terms of EAS, each of the 3 album totals from 309,000 to 477,000 units from streams, a tremendous consistency at a very high level.

Streaming Part 3

Independently of the consistency of albums tracks or the heights reached by singles, the most striking element is how all albums until She Wolf end up with 200-480,000 equivalent album sales.

This all changes with Sale el Sol. For a mostly Spanish album issued in 2010, its results were absolutely extraordinary in terms of sales. That success is confirmed by its streaming figures too. Both language versions of Loca combined add for 84 million while Rabiosa is on 65 million. Logically, Waka Waka does even better at over 200 million. They are also monsters on YouTube with combined views for this album topping 4 billion. These amazing scores add for 889,000 EAS. It is only a matter of time until it reaches 1 million units from streams alone.

Streaming Part 4

Shakira. was a disappointment upon release with album sales way down from its predecessors. While it doesn’t reverse this trend with streams, it does perform better in this avenue. The duet with Rihanna Can’t Remember to Forget You is closing in 200 million Spotify streams while Dare (La La La) is growing year after year, standing at more than 100 million to date. Both songs are also close / over 1 billion on YouTube. That’s good enough for a solid 658,000 EAS.

El Dorado‘s sales were largely mocked. Seen as a major flop, its songs kept gaining heavy airplay as well as streams in Latin markets for nearly two years. Chantaje is at 524 million on Spotify and over 2,38 billion on YouTube. La Bicicleta is also huge on both while Perro Fiel, Me Enamoré and Déjà Vu are also very solid. The total of the album is up to over 1,5 billion on Spotify and a stunning 5,5 billion on YouTube. It stands on more than 2,2 million EAS from streams alone.

The Orphan section is quite empty. It still contains Beyoncé‘s duet Beautiful Liar as well as all new songs that came out very recently. It is good enough for nearly half a million EAS, a figure that could be reached thanks to the newly released Clandestino.

Full Length related record Sales

Shakira

It sounds fairly logical to add together weighted sales of one era – studio album, physical singles, downloads, streams – to get the full picture of an album’s popularity. For older releases though, they also generate sales of various live, music videos and compilation albums.

All those packaging-only records do not create value, they exploit the value originating from the parent studio album of each of its tracks instead. Inevitably, when such compilations are issued, this downgrades catalog sales of the original LP. Thus, to perfectly gauge the worth of these releases, we need to re-assign sales proportionally to its contribution of all the compilations which feature its songs. The following table explains this method.

How to understand this table? If you check this example, these figures mean Oral Fixation Tour sold 710,000 units worldwide. Then, the second statistics column means streams of all the songs included on this package add for 1,312,473 EAS.

The second part at the right of the table shows how many streams are coming from each original album as well as the share they represent. Thus, streaming figures tell us Laundry Service songs are responsible for 22% of the Oral Fixation Tour tracklist attractiveness. In other words, it generated 159,000 of its 710,000 album sales. Eventually, we apply this methodology to all compilations.

As nearly all her albums include sizable hits, we can see that they all contributed to sales of these compilation and live sets. It is fairly obvious with the example of Live From Paris. Its track list is the closest we can get to a career spanning compilation and highlights how each and every album from Shakira is home of relevant hits.

Full Length related records Sales – Summary

Here is the most underestimated indicator of an album’s success – the amount of compilation sales of all kinds it generated. Due to the dependency of sales of the original studio albums on these releases, they are a key piece of the jigsaw.

For most artists, live and compilations sales got generated by singles of their biggest albums, which is quite normal as it usually features the artist biggest hits. This isn’t the case at all for Shakira. Both MTV Unplugged and Grandes Exitos sold very well and both are massively driven by songs of Dónde Están los Ladrones?. This is why there isn’t that much of a gap in album sales between that album and Pies Descalzos in spite of its arguably more popular songs, because quickly after its release its sales got translated into different packages.

Conclusions

As expected Laundry Service closes up counts as the most successful album of Shakira. At more than 16,7 million EAS across all formats, it is a highly valuable record which continues to grow.

Although the runner up stands much lower, on 8 million EAS, there is much more to say about her discography. Both Oral Fixation, Vol 2 and Dónde Están los Ladrones? are virtually tied at this second spot. It’s all the more impressive for the latter since it is a Spanish record.

Pies Descalzos, Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 and Sale El Sol are all around 5 million EAS. All Spanish records, that means 4 out of her top 6 are in her native language. Stunning. If She Wolf, Shakira. and El Dorado suffer from the absence of ground breaking global smashes like the remaining albums, they all maintained a healthy consistency. Each of them breaks 2 million EAS to date with the most recent one still increasing at very fast pace.

All in all, the artist sold 58,6 million EAS to date. While this is already a great achievement for a mainly Spanish language singer, the fact she is now over 6 million units from streams alone is highly promising for the future. Her back catalog also performs very well in this format. The massive market increases currently seen in Latin America, an area which jumped by more than 17,7% in 2017, are also paving a golden road for Shakira.

To go deeper…

Thanks to our new ASR (Artist Success Rating) concept, we know that her sales represent 13,8 million times the purchase of her full catalog. Coupled with her total sales, it translates into an ASR score of 161. She is tied with Ed Sheeran and ahead of Usher and Katy Perry.

Additionally, the following pages list her most successful songs as well as her records and achievements. Do not forget to check our amazing cross-artists lists posted inside the CSPC: Data Collector which includes the full listing of all CSPC results compiled so far.
