CSPC: Mariah Carey Popularity Analysis

Mariah Carey Picture

Its arrived. The one many of you wanted to be studied. For various months many of you have been requesting to add Mariah Carey among the studied acts. After completing career-listings of Madonna, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston this demand increased even more. From the mid-80s to early 00s these four singers sold so many records that talks about those iconic divas started to gain ground and haven’t stopped since.

So who sold the most? In reality, wondering which one did the best out of those four females is kind of a rich person’s problem. In fact, the first thing that needs to be said is that they all did insanely well. They all broke various records here and there and they all have no competition at all in their respective leagues – well, sorry Barbra Streisand, I haven’t forgotten about you but your career is too different to fairly include you inside this Madonna – generation legends battle.

Among Mariah Carey’s achievements feature her 18 US #1 hits, a tally putting her on par with Elvis Presley and runner up to the Beatles. She did so in a relatively smooth period for singles sales and the Hot 100 heavily factored Airplay during this era. So has she really sold that well? Let’s not forget she owns several of the very top selling foreign albums of all-time in Japan so surely she moved some units. How many though? Her 90s decade was undoubtedly intense, but that is still only 10 years. Can she really challenge the all-time top sellers within such a short period of high sales?

As usual, I’ll be using the Commensurate Sales to Popularity Concept in order to relevantly gauge her results. The concept will not only bring you sales information for all Mariah Carey albums, physical singles, download singles, music videos and streaming, it will also accurately weight all this information to conclude the truth on meaningful popularity indicators. If you are not yet familiar with the CSPC idea, the next page explains it with a short video. I fully recommend you to check it out before getting into sales figures. Of course, if you are a regular visitor feel free to get straight into the sales figures. Let’s go!

someonecallthedoctor

hey chartmasters, i wonder why i know what you want isnt counted to charmbracelet streams considered that its present on the international version of the album? i wish it could be added because it would add like 150k sales to the album lol, heres the international version of the album in Spotify with the song if you want to https://open.spotify.com/track/0Ofp0FQvq6dyGfi4jL3V8P?si=ZllHRoT8SgKwLpzyCjjXkA&utm_source=copy-link&dl_branch=1

Stephon Coleman

You guys need to update Celine Dion and Mariah Carey’s pages.

It is impossible to Confessions on a Dance Floor to generate more sales based on streams than Emancipation. The sum of We Belong Together alone have more plays on Spotify/Youtube and any other streaming platform than Madonna’s entire album. How can it only generates 580k while COADF generates almost 700k? suspicious

Joshua

Data hasnt been updated since 2017 – missing her lastest studio album completely. When will an update come?

In the Spotify numbers tool, is there a reason why:

  • Angels Cry (feat. Ne-Yo)
  • Somewhat Loved (There You Go Breaking My Heart) – feat. Mariah Carey

don’t appear at all?

Martin

Not for Angels Cry (11,669,265), as it does appear.

Somewhat Loved, I’m guessing, the tool doesn’t pick it up as hers, but instead a Jam & Lewis track. So it will just need to be added to her orphan/features.

Angels Cry Original track – you are correct

Angels Cry Remix (feat. Ne-Yo) – 10,569,352 – missing

Martin

For me, the remix is greyed out/unavailable and can’t be found in her discography. I only managed to access it, through searching for the track and managing to locate it in someones playlist. It could be that her or her label etc have withdrawn the track or blocked it in certain regions.

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4tOid32hHLxPBhAo8sqpUf?si=d4dbe1ae7e01463d

https://open.spotify.com/track/0TJRfA2MIIRd3tTDK9tPPf?si=1d086fdfb9154337

So, I am guessing this is the reason it is not being returned in search tool.

Ah ok. That makes sense then! Thanks!

Martin

Can you access the track or find it in her discography?

Michael440

Yes I can. My membership is portuguese however, don’t know if it’s been made available only to certain countries…

Martin

Seems quite peculiar that it’s available in Portugal but not the UK or I’m guessing France, where MJD is from.

Another thought I had, was perhaps it’s greyed out/unavailable to free subscribers (like me) and available to premium (are you premium) but I’m sure before Taylor withdrew her catalogue from Spotify, she suggested it was only available to paying subscribers, Spotify refused this and said if it’s on the platform, it must be available to all subscribers, so I don;t think it’s this.

Michael440

Hi Martin, Yes I am premium. Don’t know if that’s the case. The same issue happens with “Up Out My Face” Up Out My Face – 4,834,217 (shown) Up Out My Face (feat. Nicki Minaj) – 1,205,207 (missing) And Emancipation of Mimi album (the last 6 songs never show as part of the album for some reason): Don’t Forget About Us – 28,808,963 (shows in #1’s) Makin’ it Last All Night – 1,183,391 (missing) So Lonely – 485,513 (Shows in Features) We Belong Together – Remix – 5,636,036 (shows as a single) Secret Love – 100,014 (missing) Sprung – 192,397… Read more »

I’d definitely be more inclined to assume, its to do with different licensing rights, in different territories, than free or premium subscriptions.

Does anyone know when her debut album is due for Diamond? It’s been 9x Platinum for quite some time now

Anon

Hi MJD,

Is there any way you can explain how her album “Merry Christmas” was recently certified 8x Platinum? It was certified 6x Platinum in 2019, so the jump seems hard to figure out.

Also RIAA has had some other album certs that are confusing recently. Kanye West & Jay-Z’s “Watch the Throne” is certified 5x Platinum, even though the equivalent units seem to be barely past 3 million!

Thanks

Sweet Serenity

I think merry christmas was already eligible for 7×/8×platinum in 2019 but Mariah’s label only paid for the 6×platinum cert.

Jazz

Probably her record label havent issued for a re audit on the album for quite some time, and when they finally request for an audit, the album jump from 6-8 million.
