#1 MADONNA – 244,062,000
No other artist from this list made it to the 200-million level, but Madonna did so with a comfortable margin at 244 million equivalent album sales. Releasing many albums during very favorable market context, she used it perfectly to build unbelievable sales by anyone standards, even putting the likes Celine Dion or U2 a good 50 million behind. Her last two albums pretty much bombed, but the average set by Madonna in her hey-days was so high that she still at nearly 14,5 million average per album, an incredible tally over the curse of 16 albums. The fact her four non-soundtrack albums of the 80s averaged over 30 million a piece certainly helps!

Two very different fortunes shown on this list of statistics. First one is the immaculate results in all three physicals records categories. In fact, she can do no better as she is #1 in all of them. Her physical singles sales are especially magnificent at 89 million. We will see on that specific format ranking coming on next pages how much she crushes the competition on this area. Digital results aren’t so good yet. They are saved by releases during those respective eras but her catalog is performing rather badly. As an example, if we remove streaming from her last two albums to focus on her catalog, she drops to #24 in the streaming ranking, only beating Billy Joel.
