CSPC: Eminem Popularity Analysis

Itunes

Digital Singles Sales

Out of artists already studied, Rihanna dominated the digital singles sales with a terrific total of 197 million units sold. Bruno Mars at 127 million and Katy Perry at 122 million were incredibly strong as well.

For some reason we won’t expect Eminem to be among such an elite group in this category. A lot of his big hits came out before iTunes even existed, then he had some dip in popularity and then latter hits are almost more linked to Rihanna in the eye of the general public than to Eminem. This is a cruel mistake as the legendary rapper has no rival in terms of digital singles catalog sales, thus building a massive tally of 157 million in spite of all market limits he faced.

The most perfect example of this situation is Lose Yourself, itself a song released before iTunes and still running at more than 12 million downloads already, a tally that keeps climbing fast. This song ends up as one of the biggest digital hits ever on the back of catalog sales alone.

It would be an error mistake to believe this smash is the exception as for Eminem standards it is pretty much the rule. I won’t lie, it is incredibly difficult to precisely define how many units each song sold. Not only half of his discography sold steadily off radar all its copies, the singer catalog has never been audited and certified correctly. The best we can do is pick up known information for individual songs and then distribute remaining sales from published artist totals into the other songs as per their streaming distribution. This way, even if all stand-alone figure shouldn’t be considered as an absolute truth, the overall total is as educated as it can be. If we still check hits one by one, Eminem has an estimated 23 multi-million selling songs, an immense total.

As a reminder, the weighting is done with a 10 to 1,5 ratio between one album and one digital single.

  1. Great Work MJD, as always! I knew Eminem was huge, but not that big in terms of other formats. Eminem added an impressive 53,8m with other formats. That’s impressive!

I imagine Michael Jackson’s total will be massive! Keep up the good work!

By the way, MJD, can you do a CSPC analysis on Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Beyonce and Usher when you’re done with your current projects? Thanks

  2. Amazing sales! He is probably the biggest artist of this millenium, even bigger than Britney.

Can you tell us the difference between Madonna’s and Celine’s albums sales? Is there a chance that Celine can outsell her someday (at least in albums sales, Celine is not a singles artist).

    1. Yes sales numbers from SoundScan reveal Eminem beat The Beatles in 00’s he wins ‘Artist of The Decade’ awards 2000-2009.

  3. The official numbers say Recovery has sold 10m but I guess Relapse has sold less than 4,4m
    I believe it’s 4,0-4,1m

  4. It seems you love Eminem because don’t stop to tell the fake sales of media have for his albums like Eminem Show with 28millions or Marshall with 32millions. It’s good to know he has sold quite less than many websites say.

  5. What are Eminem’s at least top 20 best selling singles list?

I love Eminem a lot, my favorite rapper and is definitely…

    THE KING OF RAP!
