Hi cass!
CSN, CSNY and Buffalo Springfield will be treated too during Neil Young analysis.
Solo and duo albums won't since their sales are too low compare to the time it would require. Maybe one day? 🙂
Hi Anthony,
Thanks for the reply!
That's great new about CSN, CSNY and Buffalo Springfield, any chance the solo stuff from David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash and the duo's Crosby & Nash and Stills-Young Band will be done? Considering when people speak about them they generally combine sales. For example "The trio configuration has sold around 13 million albums, while the quartet has sold around 20 million. Combined sales of the group including solo, duo, trio and quartet versions is over 70 million." And they all played all over each others albums, the majority of their albums were Gold during the 70's, and apparently Stephen Stills debut is the highest selling debut album of the four released after Deja Vu even beating Neil Young's After The Gold Rush. Despite After The Gold Rush being certified double platinum, while Stills' debut only having been certified Gold on release and not re-certified since (Stills also claims his early albums are all multi platinum in the albums liner notes). It would be interesting to compare their 70's solo careers, I think people would be surprised at how successful they were especially in comparison to Neil!
You're welcome cass!
I think that the best we can do is a very quick estimation of the sales thanks to discogs figures (let's say for exemple "Stills has sold between 15 ans 20m solo albums"). If the figures are big enough they may be added to the analysis but the chance remains low!
My knowledge about sales for such precise artist is limited, so the best answer about it will be done by MJD 🙂
He released 3 albums.
These artists only interest me if they had a blockbuster like Shania Twain.
Jimmy never had such album.
Why have no interest? I don't understand. Jimi is absolutely best guitarist. Ask Jimmy Page, Clapton, Beck.....and made beautiful songs, Wind cries Mary, Hej Joe....
Hi Cass!
I need to check in greater details but to be honest it's unlikely, Crosby, Stills and Nash sold poorly, at best they have albums at 2 million sales or so. They released so many records and have been involved in so many projects too that I think it would be too much work for the value they would bring!
Hi MJD,
Thanks for the response. That’s a shame, I know its a lot to ask but would you consider doing their solo/duo albums as well to complete the whole collective (or even just their 70’s albums)? I have never seen any figures of their solo/duo albums, though claims of the whole collective together are reaching 70 million as stated above. It would feel like a missed opportunity especially as you’re doing CSN (without Neil) with Neil’s solo releases as well. I also think people forget how much of a bigger star Stills was than Young in the early 70's (due to Neil's stature today) which might show some interesting, unusual sales numbers. I hope you consider doing this! Anyway thanks for all the hard work, I thoroughly enjoy reading the new articles you put up!
i know they haven't been studied yet, but how much do you think Jay-Z and Kanye's total CSPC number is
Right, however some divas not on the list of possible choices stuns me like p.e. Mary J. Blige, Donna Summer and Annie Lennox (I really think that, including her work with Eurythmics she would be above the threshold). Can you give me at least an estimate of those three? Thanks in advance
Hi Johnny be Good!
On top of the ones already listed among choices, a lot more sold in the 30-50m ballpark, these include many big names. To me the first goal is to reduce the number of remaining articles to less than 100, and from that point we will keep the voting list to 100 artists, adding progressively artists who are just below the criteria. Mary J Blige should be over 40m, Annie Lennox roughly 20m on her own (we do not merge discographies to see if threshold are made as they would appear distinctively in the all-time list), Donna Summer should really be very close to 50m, it's not impossible either that she topped them, by she would still be a lower seller than nearly all the ones included (for meeting the 50m criteria).
I'm really surprised to see Vysotsky on that list. I barely knew his name and didn't think he had been so popular. Must have been a USSR-only singer.
Hehe, he's definitely one of the artists few would expect here. I uncovered a bit of his sales from USSR shipment codes in this article. His numbers there are quite stunning for sure.
Great, thanks for the infos
About divas, the top 10 CSPC is currently as follow
1-Madonna
2-Celine Dion
3-Mariah Carey
4-Whitney Houston
5-Barbra Streisand
6-Britney Spears
7-Rihanna
8-Taylor Swift
9-Adele
10-Enya
Do you expect someone of those not yet studied might break in the divas top 10? I think it's very difficult since Enya, who currently close the top 10 is at almost 88 mln EAS, a very high total, but I think maybe Tina Turner might have some shot, or simply the threshold is too high for the remaing divas?
Thanks in advance
Hi Johnny be Good!
Nobody will trouble this top 10 among missing artists! Some have good numbers like Tina Turner and Linda Ronstadt, but they won't top Enya!
enya being the 10th best selling female artist of all time doesn’t’t sot right with me for some reason
Maybe because she doesn't have the same media exposure of the other divas. She is extremely reclusive, she rarely gives interviews and she never toured. But I think that her reclusiveness is a big part of her charm. Also most of her songs were not instant hits, but instead they achieved success little by little.
It's a little strange to not see Clapton on the list, I know MJD had him at 130m albums over 10 years ago, and that wasn't even including his many successful bands like Cream or Derek & The Dominos...
I voted for Genesis though 😆 I think it would be a nice companion piece to the Phil Collins article.
Hi Fanofpop!
Merging Diana + the Supremes she may do it, but in the ranking they won't be listed that way. Gloria is not as high.
Probably around 80m and 65m respectively if I were to guess. Could be very very off though.
We’ll just have to wait for MJD to get through them coz there’s a lot of more requested artists left ig.
Hello MJD and member of chartsmasters.org !!
Even if i'm not a paid member, i'd like to see Toto analyzed I think I will only deserve to be analyzed also for their 2 celebry songs like Africa and Hold the line which are respectively on Spotify with 961.796.450 plays and 324.003.674 plays I hope you answer me.
Hi!
Thanks for bringing up Toto. They might meet the 15m for an album requirement with Toto IV when I think about it, I'll see if we can add them to the voting.
Btw, you can give 3 votes for free just by registering 😉
