Michael,

If so many people bought them then they can't be terrible no matter if 1 million or 500 million people listen to them. He used his own opinion to shade Celine and her albums which is illogical and completely immature and rude.

Martin, Im talking abour the overall music scene. Not just streamibg figures. Back in the 90s I remember towards the end of the decade music became so diverse.

Its just my opinion. I feel like her best albums are Celine Dion and The Colours Of My Love. Let's Talk About Love is terrible. I like My Heart Will Go On tho.

And just because an album sells a lot, doesn't mean its good. The critics destroyed Celine's albums. Especially Let's Talk About Love. She was a commercial giant. She's never had an acclaimed album w/ music professionals. Truth.

Maybe they are because well, there are no popular rock music nowadays. Also, if you bought the album before, you've heard the songs, so you would most likely want to listen to the music that you haven't bought through Spotify. Just my opinion.

And Celine and Mariah's music are usually being played on radios and music contests or tv shows.

How is that possible considering female singers rely more on their voice usually?

How do we measure if an album is good? Critics are one thing sales another. The general public is more important than a minority of critics.

HIStory sort of would top this list if both discs were included 😛 Oh well!

These lists continue to fascinate. I was quite shocked to see Dr. Dre rank above Biggie and Tupac by such a significant margin, but his streams really are massive.
I think it also stands out how rapidly streaming is still growing. In the 16 months or so since Nirvana's CSPC article (about 13% of Spotify's existence), Nevermind has gained 519 million streams, about 38.7% of its to-date total. Similarly, Thriller earned 39% of its total in 14 months, Morning Glory earned 36.6% in the last 11, Appetite for Destruction and Californication 25.9% and 19.8% respectively in the last 8, etc.

Obviously. If that were the case the entire list would be made up of Greatest hits albums. Jackie wouldn't be number 1 either.

Very excited about 00's albums. Maybe we gonna have more female albums this time. I see Beyoncé and Rihanna with multiple entries. Eminem probably too. I hope Linkin Park, Evanescence and My Chemical Romance with good positions.

Its so outstanding how huge Michael was in a decade that wasnt even his prime. Outdoing the divas who debuted a full decade or even two behind him.

This is a list of the most streamed albums of the 90s on Spotify. Celine Dion may not be in the top 40 but her most streamed albums are definitely in the top 100 and that's still good.

Those top 40 most streamed albums may be streaming better than Celine's albums but (except for Nirvana's "nevermind" album) those albums won't ever outsell Celine's two biggest albums. (not in a distant future)

and facts:

Top-selling artists -EAS
11. Céline Dion – 193,422,000 (as of Sep 2016)
38. Nirvana – 89,182,000 (as of Jul 2017)
57. Oasis – 58,725,000 (as of Dec 2017)

Top-selling albums -EAS
10. 1991 – Nirvana – Nevermind – 52,930,000
17. 1997 – Céline Dion – Let’s Talk About Love – 46,084,000
24. 1996 – Céline Dion – Falling Into You – 41,895,000
127. 1993 – Nirvana – In Utero – 18,955,000
96. 1993 – Céline Dion – The Colour Of My Love – 22,558,000
200. 1998 – Céline Dion – These Are Special Times – 14,504,000

Top-selling singles-EAS
1. 1997 – Céline Dion – My Heart Will Go On [Titanic / Let’s Talk About Love] – 62,750,000
39. 1991 – Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit [Nevermind] – 17,330,000
45. 1996 – Céline Dion – Because You Loved Me [Falling Into You] – 16,310,000
81. 1991 – Nirvana – Come As You Are [Nevermind] – 13,880,000
93. 1993 – Céline Dion – The Power of Love [The Colour Of My Love] – 13,080,000
107. 1996 – Céline Dion – It’s All Coming Back to Me Now [Falling Into You] – 12,280,000

So with those figures, Celine Dion is way, way bigger than Nirvana overall.

Nirvana may have the most streamed album in the 90s but I prefer Celine's huge success/achievements.

The best Toni Braxton album and yeah I also thought it could join the top 40. I did hope Hanson's "Middle Of Nowhere" could make it as well as Tina Arena's "In Deep" album.

I'd disagree she is the bigger act, sold more yes, but bigger act no. I don't think her music and her as an artist have the continuing popularity, influence and appeal that Nirvanas does. She maybe the contemporary artist out of the two but I'd say Nirvana are the bigger and more relevant in 2018.

Total EAS:
Céline Dion – 193,422,000 (as of Sep 2016)
Nirvana – 89,182,000 (as of Jul 2017)?

EAS difference is 104,240,000. That's more than 100 million EAS difference.

Nirvana, bigger and more relevant in 2018 than Celine Dion?

Celine's still getting invitations to sings movie theme songs , music awards, continues to sell tickets on Las Vegas, successful world tour this year, has continued to sell Celine Dion merchandises, her songs being played on radios, tvs, and the Nununu commercial. That's year 2018.

So what did Nirvana do?

Oh and I almost forgot. Surely, Celine has a bigger net income in 2018 than Nirvana.

RLAAMJR,

It looks like in your parallel World Kurt Cobain is still alive. Big news for you, Nirvana's singer is dead since 1994. That's why comparing their 90s total sales is just dumb and why saying Celine is more relevant right now because she is "still getting invitations" is even worst. The catalog of Nirvana easily outsells the one of Celine year after year in spite of (obviously) no show and a career truncated to 4 years.

How convenient it is to compare her 90s stats to a band who's singer is dead since 1994, right? Surely albums that "won't ever outsell" the ones of Celine don't exist in your World, in the one of remaining people here albums like Bodyguard, Metallica, Dangerous, Come On Over, etc, have been released. Stop lying to yourself to super inflate everything related to Celine, this is getting seriously embarrassing at the moment.

It's not Celine Dion's fault to take care of herself to stay alive and still make records.

Nirvana outsells Celine Dion? You must be talking about Spotify only.

Hi MJD,

I was just providing the total EAS for each, by artists, by albums, by singles with figures provided by this site.

Martin was the one who compared Nirvana and Celine Dion and that Nirvana is the bigger and more relevant act in 2018.

I don't know how you measure. But I measure by the production, songwriting, compositions and quality. Her albums are mostly filler w/ middle-of-the-road songwriting. A bunch of unrealistic love ballads w/ vague artificial storytelling. Nothing real about her "music". And most of its covers of other artists originals. Something just feels cold about her "artistry" outside of big vocal acrobatics. That's just my (and many music professionals opinions). Same w/ some Whitney & Mariah albums too. Especially, "Music Box". Daydream, Butterfly & Mariah Carey (Debut) are solid albums imo. I just don't believe or feel anything Celine sings.

I feel you.I notice lack of coherence on some of her albums. For instance,"One Heart" was an album that even Celine did not like, but Sony released it.
They say that her french body of work is more "expressive and real".

Mariah does not like much her first albums either.Sony wanted her to recreate the same thing on every album. When she decided to break the "Formula",Sony did not like it. For them,it was all about money.

I notice that you didn't entitle the other articles as the greatest of the 80s, 70s, 60s, etc.

True, but each list has been titled with sort of accolade (must-buy, classic, etc.) - not quite the same but they all draw a parallel between popularity and quality. We all know there's no way to quantify something like the artistic merit of music, it's all personal opinion, but recurring streams are at least a more objective measure than an individual rock critic's judgement.

That's it!

Critics are always so easy in calling something the greatest without even defining it. What's the greatest? The finest piece of art? The most creative project? The most influential record? The most entertaining one? At least organic streaming data tell us what the general public thinks about the latter. Critics completely lost their credibility when they continued listing new rock albums as the best / most influential / important / relevant releases year after year while telling at the same time that rock is dead since at least 25 years.
