True but Innuendo has some pretty good numbers. It just lacks one massive hit single. I think it will creep up a bit from where it is now but I can't see it reaching the top 40.

Brandon sweety... this is about Spotify only. Not Youtube honey LOL
And HIStory album on Spotify is under 300M, so...
CM specially made this article because Spotify is 10years old this year and they want to celebrate it by reviewing the top performing albums of every pre-2000.
Maybe CM will make YT version someday... but honey, YT doesn't always have all tracks from an album -__-

You really need to re-think how you title these articles. These are the 40 most streamed albums, not the 40 greatest.

Hi mate,

I recalculated the Oasis, Nirvana, Dre & RHCPs albums about a week ago, knowing this would be coming up and to see how they were fairing, as I'd not looked at them in a while. I incorporated everything that was added to albums from the 1980's, such as b-sides to singles of those albums and outtakes & finished versions of tracks from those album sessions, that have ended up being released on Super Deluxe editions.

Nevermind I ended up with 1,310,107,804 from the original album and 1,351,526,532 for everything related to it. I took out streams for "School" because although it features four times on the Super Deluxe version, it has it's origins on Bleach not Nevermind and also Sliver, which again featured four times but was a stand alone single released about midway between Bleach & Nevermind and was later included on Insecticide in 1992.

Californication was quite easy, it had 1,100,964,065 for the original albums and 1,116,757,666 for the deluxe version.

Whats the Story Morning Glory, had 1,035,702,425 from the original album and 1,117,664,432 when all it's b-sides and extras added in.

2001 I had 1,296,911,000 for the original Explicit Version of the album, when the Censored and Instrumental Version were added the album came to 1,348,309.

With regards to Dres 2001, you've missed all of the "Censored Versions"; XXplosive (1.3m), Bitch Niggaz (0.9m), Whats The Difference (1.4m), Some LA Niggaz (1.3m), Lolo (0.7m) & Ed-ucation (0.4m). You've also missed out the Explicit version of The Message (8.0m) yet included Censored & instrumental and completely left of "Outro" (4.0m).

With regards to the adding of extras, I'm personally not for it, that's the job of the orphan album in my opinion. Also it's not very consistent and gives a skewed result if the 60's, 80's & 00's have it and the 50's, 70's, 90's & 10's don't.

Hi MJD. Isn't it actually 10m away from 300m? Or are remix versions of singles not counted?

Jake,

We are strictly talking about streaming figures here not album sales. Dumb.

This is how it stands as of today;

INNUENDO --- 22,392,577
I'M GOING SLIGHTLY MAD --- 13,184,913
HEADLONG --- 13,445,656
I CANT LIVE WITH YOU --- 3,186,422
DON’T TRY SO HARD --- 3,238,681
RIDE THE WILD WIND --- 1,875,826
ALL GODS PEOPLE --- 1,132,974
THESE ARE THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES --- 20,754,922
DELILAH --- 1,659,042
THE HITMAN --- 1,286,586
BIJOU --- 2,922,029
THE SHOW MUST GO ON --- 95,290,420
LOST OPPORTUNITY --- 296,729
INNUENDO OVERALL TOTAL --- 180,666,777

While it maybe does not possess the monster tracks that Jazz, News of the World, The Game, A Night At The Opera, Hot Space or The Works do, it seems to have better depth than most of them.

Looking into their albums, there is not one other Queen album that has five tracks over 13m streams, A Night at the Opera is the only other with five tracks over 10m streams and that seems to be in part thanks to the recent biopic and the heightened interest in the album, which has resulted in Death On Two Legs becoming it's fifth track to pass the 10m mark.

Between March 2017 (2,816,034) and May 2018 (5,727,284) (15 months) it was listened to a total of 2,911,250 times. Between May 2018 (5,727,284) and today (11,090,362) (6 months) it was listened to a total of 5,363,078 times.

Though the 40 Most-streamed albums would be the most appropriate title of this article but people just need to read more so they would find out how is the least based on.

I'd say male rock and rock in general really dominated. Male rock accounts for 6 of the top 10 albums and 22 of the 40 in total and rock in general, adding mixed groups The Cranberries & The Smashing Pumpkins and Alanis Morissette, makes 25 of the 40.

Male rappers done very well at the top end of the chart, with 4 of the top 10 albums but overall, there was only 1 more entry, so only 5 out of the 40.

While the list is still obviously male & rock oriented, 33 of the 40 albums were either by a male band (23), a male solo artist (7) or a mixed group (3), this is the best showing yet for females, with 10 of the 40 positions occupied by either a female solo artist (5), a mixed group (3) or a female group (2).

OMG, where these Celine haters come from? Just because their idol flopped dor a long time but sometimes being referred to for old albums? IWALY and MHWGO both are one of most famous and greatest, timeless songs by divas apart from also best-selling. And Madonna, who missed the list just like Barbra in last three decades, is no doubt the one of famous and evergreen female artist herself, her name bigger than her records, and some of the list is also greatest, but how could other flop Star's stan criti.. for the top 2 best-selling greatest-hits divas, look your own favor's collection, out of chart, tour canceled for poor sales, because little one want listening and loving themselves. Theyes may be remember for one song or album, but most of them will be shaded by their "greatest", yes, I know the song and listen to it again and again, but who is the singer or writer? No interest in knowing. One Hit Nobody?

Celine Dion's music is not forgotten. That 90's adult contemporary music just isn't popular on Spotify. No big deal. Celine is an artist that can tour/do residencies for the rest of her life because of the music from her big albums.

I'm also surprised Britney didn't make it but I suppose it's because her first album is very teen pop it's only good for nostalgic listening and not just "general" listening

Hi Donald!

Why so? if a bunch of magazine editors feel legitimate to call the greatest albums of all-time, or even some unique individuals, why the opinion of 200 million music consumers wouldn't be legitimate at least as much?

Hi Martin!

Gonna check these numbers, not sure myself as I haven't retrieved them. About "missing" versions, it could be due to the delay, time to retrieve everything, make sure nothing was missing and then write the whole thing, they are about a week old already so will be lower than current numbers!

Yeah, I wasn't meaning that my numbers were different to yours, I'd already appreciated that it was unlikely we both added them all up on the same day, I was just showing what additional tracks added to them.

Coincidentally, it look likes we both did compile 2001s streams on the same day, as most of our tracks have the same figures, the ones that differ, differ by exactly the amount I have for the censored version or as explained for The Message and Outro.

Britney, like most pop divas, does way better on YouTube than on Spotify. "...Baby One More Time" is nearing 400 million views on YouTube while "Sometimes" is well over 120 million and "(You Drive Me) Crazy" is nearing 100 million. But on Spotify, the album is around 10 million streams away from 300 million.

Totally agree with you MJD. Most of the times these bunch of music critics said this particular album is so great, it usually turns out to be a flop and most of the times they said an album is so average or bad it turns out to be a best seller. You cant call an album as the greatest album ever if people are not buying or streaming it. I dont even know why people still pays attention to them.

"Greatest" is not the right word to use because those are only streaming figures in Spotify. Of course, you have to add figures from other things, like how you calculate EAS.

TONI BRAXTON - SECRETS (1994)
COME ON OVER HERE --- 1,144,526
YOU'RE MAKIN' ME HIGH --- 22,245,270
THERE'S NO ME WITHOUT YOU --- 1,664,849
UN-BREAK MY HEART --- 74,150,108
TALKING IN HIS SLEEP --- 1,223,089
HOW COULD AN ANGEL.. --- 8,929,695
FIND ME A MAN --- 1,037,337
LET IT FLOW --- 4,382,604
WHY SHOULD I CARE --- 1,135,766
I DON’T WANT TO --- 2,925,448
I LOVE ME SOME HIM --- 4,578,210
IN THE LATE OF NIGHT --- 857,445
OVERALL TOTAL --- 124,274,347

It's clear Un-Break My Heart is still a popular track in the streaming age, just not as popular as a lot of other tracks from the 1990's. It's actually quite far from even being the most popular track of 1994, the following tracks from this list are all more popular;

MARIAH CAREY - ALL I WANT' - 412,000,000
GREEN DAY - BASKET CASE - 285,000,000
CRANBERRIES - ZOMBIE - 271,000,000
NOTORIOUS - JUICY - 256,000,000
NOTORIOUS - BIG POPPA - 196,000,000
ELTON JOHN - CAN YOU FEEL.. - 170,000,000
ELTON JOHN - CIRCLE OF LIFE - 117,000,000
GREEN DAY - WHEN I COME… - 117,000,000
ELTON JOHN - I JUST CAN'T… - 104,000,000
ELTON JOHN - HAKUNA MATATA - 101,000,000

These are some other 1994 tracks that didn't turn up in the list but are also more popular than Un-Break My Heart. There may in fact be more, as I didn't check 1994 that extensively.

SOUNDGARDEN - BLACK HOLE SUN - 178,049,983
JEFF BUCKLEY - HALLELUJAH - 157,000,000
WARREN G - REGULATE - 156,000,000
BECK - LOSER - 122,000,000
BON JOVI ALWAYS 115,000,000
WEEZER - BUDDY HOLLY - 96,000,000
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - STREETS OF PHILADELPHIA - 88,000,000
