Most streamed artists on Spotify

Are you interested in the top 1000 most streamed artists ever on Spotify ranking, continuously updated? Here it is.

You have read it well. We present to you a Top 1000, instantly loaded and with data refreshed whenever you want.

How does it works?

This ranking presents the most streamed artists on Spotify based on tracks available inside sections Albums, Singles and Compilations of his personal page.

While the highest part of the list is comprehensive, as we go down artists may be missing.

If you notice an omission, just use our streaming search tool to look for the related artist and if he scored enough streams he will automatically and instantly appear here.

Numbers are continuously updated as you search for them. As soon as new daily data is in for an artist, this will be reflected in this overall ranking.

As the Spotify database is tricky, we can't guarantee you there won't be occasional data glitches, even if we developed several controls to grant data consistency. If an issue appears in spite of these controls, manual fixes will be performed.

How can I access to it?

Easy, here it is: Top 1000 most streamed artists. Just like the search tool it is a page rather than a post so you can put it among your favorites and keep going back at it!

The link is also available through the ChartMasters streaming tools lab as well as the Useful Links section of the right-menu.

Vow! Impressive updates to the site these days!!! Great work!

I guess it's obvious that songs removed by Spotify is not included in this list. For some, like Def Leppard, that's quite a lot.
Re-recordings of three of their top songs were removed after their entire back catalog was finally made available in January 2018.

The re-recorded songs are:

Pour Some Sugar on Me (2012) - 104,588,000
Hysteria (2013) - 17,842,000
Rock of Ages (2012) - 16,896,000

The 3 tracks combined - 139,326,000

So instead of the 605,893,000 (#817) listed here, their total is actually 745,219,000 (#713)

I know this is extremely picky but any way to change tracks for songs so like commentary, repeats and karaoke versions don't count?

Just for fun I made a top 40 of artist with the biggest difference between the table presented in your article "Spotify all-time most streamed artists" from December 30th 2019, and the "Top 1000 most streamed artists ever on Spotify" as of May 12th 2020.

40. Marshmello - 800,432,751

(*) artists with a major release during December - May

Some observations:

I'm not sure I got everybody. I believe some acts like DaBaby and Tones and I could be somewhere in here but they're not in the December table.

Juice WRLD's popularity is probably at its peak after his tragic death.

This shows again "Why Spotify’s Monthly Listeners stat is irrelevant" (Ok! Maybe it isn't irrelevant but it's tricky at the very least).
E.g. Maroon 5 has 42m monthly listeners (14th) ; Ozuna has 32m monthly listeners (43rd) yet the latter has gain way more streams.

I guess the old table was made before Christmas. That's the only explanation to Bublé's ridiculous number, but even other artists that get big pushes from the holidays like Mariah or Sinatra are nowhere near those figures. Who knows?

The Bohemian Rhapsody effect seems to be wearing off and The Beatles are slowly overtaking Queen. Regardless, it's amazing that two bands that were in their prime before most of these artists were even born (Eminem being the sole exception and only with Queen) are pulling off these massive numbers.

It's curious that all the bands that can be considered Rock ( some are a big stretch) are within a short range of 60m.

It's not hard to find latin american cities among the "Where people listen"section . That region must have a gigantic share of the worldwide streams. No wonder spanish language artists are doing amazing.

And I have a question. Some artist like Kendrick and Michael Jackson have less streams now than in December. Why is that?

As I said, it was just for fun.
Thanks for your amazing work Chartmasters.

I just noticed that BTS should be above Ed Sheeran. My bad.

Another observation about BTS. Them and The Beatles have a relatively low monthly listeners number. So fans of both bands go berzerk with their catalogues. My take is that they have the most loyal fans on the list.

A lot of artists are constantly adding previously released material to their artists pages and that messes up some of the totals. That would explain Buble's figure and also Halsey's 2.8b gain (She was recently given a lead credit for Closer). Same thing with J Balvin. There's no way he has gained almost 6 billion streams this year alone. He should be slightly behind Bad Bunny, even perhaps Billie.

Hi Rod!

Thanks for making this entertaining list and happy to see that you are liking our new content 🙂

About some artists going down, it's due to the fact we know control the artist ID still even if a song is inside the artist page. This takes off Jackson 5 / Jacksons hits that are on MJ's page through compilations like The Essential. Adding all 3 acts would give a closer indication of his streams this year. As for Kendrick, there are songs from Black Panther that are likely taken off now, I haven't check in detail to be honest.

The big technical issue to build all these lists was being able to define to which date the data retrieved by the API is valid. Spotify doesn't update the data at the exact same time every day, and the process takes about one full hour. During this time frame, big hits will appear multiple times in a list because Spotify bots would have updated their streams through the album versions for example but versions available on playlists still have the number of streams from the previous day.

The script I wrote checks the data to detect automatically when the data is fresh to the new day, and detect when the data is corrupted with duplicated numbers so that we don't add them to the database. To detect these duplications, we compare how many distinct tracks there are now compared to the previous time the artist was looked at. If an artist has never been searched though, that we are in 'duplication time', and that no other user search for some other artist detected streams were unstable, the script can let a figure with duplicated numbers sneak in. That's what happened to Bublé - he isn't at 6.7b but at 4.2b instead! I have now fixed it. Since most artists now have a valid first save, it will prevent these false numbers to be saved.

Matt is correct about some songs making the artist page of some artists later on, like Halsey.

Back in late December, I checked more artists to compile the list than those who ultimately made it, here are a few interesting ones' old totals:
Lewis Capaldi 2 010 915 170
DaBaby 1 869 633 034
Roddy Ricch 998 876 786
Tones & I 855 267 097

You're right Rod, The Beatles are running about 4-5% ahead of Queen on Spotify now. However Queen are still being streamed more than twice as much as The Beatles on Youtube.

a little point as a bts fan and of course one of those followers and monthly listeners, they're also one of the few (if not the only ones) that have a 1:1 correlation with monthly listeners/daily streams which are 12-13m daily. it's not only about loyality but also appreciating their work, i think that seeing them up there between a lot of artists is a proud moment for us fans and a big slap in the face to labels that thinks that spending money on payola and playlists is more important than creating a solid relationship with the fans.
