Yes, it all comes down to how you define them. Early Beatles were/are definitely considered pop as were The Supremes and 60s Marvin Gaye and 60s Stevie Wonder (Mootown was considered "pop" in the 60s). I didn't know that The Rolling Stones were considered pop though. I always thought that since they were (even more) blatantly influenced by the blues than The Beatles, they were always classified as a rock band. I always considered Carole King, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, etc. more in the singer-songwriter genre than pop but again, it's all about how one defines these genres.
You are correct about the hierarchy that was created in the 60s but it seems like that has broken down a lot, especially in the past two decades. That probably is mainly due to the influence of hip-hop and how it's impacted most of the music that we hear.
I think it's quite evident from my posts, that I am speaking mainly for myself and perhaps presuming a little on behalf of 50 year old, British/European men. Not one bit of perpetuation of this being about everybody.
On the middle part, but we are not trying to decipher why it is that I've heard more from those other artists. It's purely about what I've heard full stop. I fully appreciate there are reasons why I've had more exposure etc to those other acts/songs but ultimately, reasons or not, it is the way it is.
I wasn't surprised, I was merely stating that things like RITD and TOL are more recognisable to me, than any of Taylors tracks and that the tracks I have heard by her somehow just don't seem to sink in with me. There was no emotion involved and certainly not surprise.
I think because it was based mainly around rock music and rock music being seen as this outlet of mainly male social consciousness, it had meaning prescribed to it, it was rebellious, it spoke for people, people related to it, it spoke out about injustices, it helped change views etc etc etc but it become bloated, it was predominately aimed at white males and I think it all just became too pretentious. It lost it's ability to say something important or different and just became irrelevant to a large degree. There's also the fact that it didn't really say or relate much, to quite a large proportion of the people in world.
Hi Ben! The "missing" sales are from Eyes Open Chinese EP which I removed as it happens to be an unofficial release.
Hi Zeusfelix!
Yes & no, one macro from the excel sheet wasn't updated, which led to the display showing wrong numbers for QQ streams. The EAS was already correct though as the total CSPC is counted with another formula. The overall increase now is simply due to her new daily stremas which add to large numbers every day.
Hi Martin, all those artists have scored more UK no. 1 singles and for a large part are more single oriented than Swift. She has more UK no 1 albums than all of them, probably because of her fanbase, although she's breaking the mainstream more and more these days. Generally speaking, this might be true for the whole of Europe, she is big now, but she never was this dominating as in the US, or Asian countries. It looks like that's working, career-wise, for her.
Yes but as I said in another post, I appreciate and understand there are reasons why things are the way they are but ultimately, it doesn't change how things are.
It's similar with say Guns N' Roses & Bon Jovi & Led Zeppelin, in the UK. The general public has a far greater awareness of Bon Jovi and Guns N Roses and their tracks, their members etc but Led Zeppelin have sold more albums than either of them and have more #1 albums (8), than BJ (5) and GnR (2) added together. We can all presume reasons why; Zeppelin issued no singles or videos of their tracks in the UK, seldom done TV promos/interviews, seldom licensed their work for use in other media etc but at the end of the day, Axl, Living On A Prayer, Sweet Child Of Mine, Slash, Jon Bon Jovi, You Give Love a Bad Name etc are all probably far more recognisable to the man in the street than Page, Plant or Stairway To Heaven and Whole Lotta Love.
“ ultimately, it doesn’t change how things are” THIS!!! I couldn’t have said it better. The fact is Taylor is much bigger than the acts you mentioned. We can’t change reality, even if it goes against our personal perceptions.
But it's not going against my personal perception! I know she is, I wasn't saying she wasn't, I was saying that her and her music are less recognisable to me, which are two different things.
I have to agree with Martin. In many cases it's a matter of age. I'm even ten years younger than him. Indeed, I've heard the name Taylor Swift, also from the so-called Swifties, but I don't know a single song by her. I probably heard a thing or two from her (could also be from someone else) while watching a TikTok or Instagram video, but I don't remember anything. So, she might be relevant for a certain age range, but for the rest she definitely isn't. This has nothing to do with disrespect or trolling. I would also never argue with anyone about tastes in music, because for me it's true: there's no arguing about taste. But I think everyone should be allowed to express his or her point of view (as Martin did) without getting shitstormed by some Swifties or other users who cannot deal with different opinions.
There’s a change in the streaming formula? This daily updates do not make any sense
A lot of albums these were getting 14k+ updates but not anymore what change?
I think you have messed up something with Taylor formula because her album updates since the last update of her article doesn’t make sense
