Don't forget Merry Christmas! Then almost 50% of her EAS is pop-influenced.
Well Mariah had whole 90s to sell when album sales peaked in Asia as well. Thought her overseas sales decreased when she left adult music for rnb. After music box. Which also made sony mad.
yes, that's true, but it's normal for sales to drop after a certain peak, but I still think her remained stable
Butterfly - 16.1M
#1's - 16.5M
Rainbow - 10M
And these albums have some of the biggest hits of her career (Honey, My All, When You Believe, Heartbreaker)
The biggest disappointment was Glitter, but she released a GH ALBUM in the same year which sold 4.7M and is certified 3xP in the UK, Australia and 2x Platinum in the US
Woww, Mariah sold a lot of albums in Germany, her team needs to update her certifications there
When will you guys update Whitney Houston, Celine Dion & Madonna's pages??
It's all down to how they perform on the leader board for updates. Currently Madonna is 6th but the other 2 are much lower, so could be some time before they are revisited. You can check the current list here. https://chartmasters.org/cspc-requests-leaderboard/?type=update
Memories of an imperfect angel and caution soon will be her first albuns that has more eas from streams than pure sales. Espically awesome for Memories who wasnt released during the Streaming age. That album aged pretty well, considering it was not so successful at first. Also Bye bye is kind of going viral right now.
Why is All I want for Christmas in this article reported to have sold 19,198,000 EAS but in the Top Songs Chart, it states 16,457,000 EAS?
Congratulations for great work.
MC's success is impressive but she clearly benefited from a more favourable factors and a better context than Madonna experienced in the 80s and 90s.
As already said the music market was at its peak in the mid 90s and it was easier to have albums hitting the 30 millions bar even with just one hit (hello Alanis Morisette and Shania Twain) She also benefited hugely from the implementation of the Nielsen Soundscan system created in 1991 when they started to include airplays to track the popularity of songs. MC has always been more supported by radios than M and without Nielsen Soundscam system I'm not sure she would have had so many #1s.
After 1991 Madonna had almost no #1s (just 3)
Lastly MC has AIWFCIY a huge recurrent hit every Christmas that is also an unexpected stroke of luck.
I'd like to read your thoughts !
As has been mentioned on this site, most artists release averagely more than half of their value – 50 percent plus their total EAS – within four to eight years. Madonna released more than half of her most valuable songs between 1983 and 1989, therefore within six years. That was during a period when Mariah Carey was still in high school making demos with her friend before she was discovered by Tommy Mottola. During the years of MC's greatest success – 1990 to 1995 – Madonna was already past her peak – despite some later hit albums, notably Ray Of Light.
Hence, I wouldn't use the period from 1991 on as a universal comparison between those two artists, as they each had their greatest successes at different periods.
The 90s definitely had a better environment for selling albums than any other decade, but I would think 1 hit for selling an album did happen (I'm thinking of CD's Let's taĺk about love or Hootie & the Blowfish or MC Hammer), but your examples fit less in this format. Alanis actually had airplay and MTV exposure for at least 4/5 songs off JLP and 3 songs off Shania's COO were big hits. That 1 of them is now proving long-term succes in streaming, doesn't say much about the situation in the 90s IMO.
Hi Admin,
Just wondering why ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU by MC only is not updated in this list (though it already has 19M on MC article). This list includes only the collab of MC and JB at 16M CSPC. Is there any reason for omission or just a typo error only.
Thank you.
Thanks a lot. I totally agree with you. As i live in Europe, Alanis or Shania's multiple hits might have gone less noticed, I'm not sure. I'm also feeling MC's huge success in the US charts was pushed a lot by airplays. I think radios were more R&B friendly. If I remember correctly in 2008, "4 minutes to save the world" was the top selling single in the US at some point but couldn't reach the top of the Hot100 due to smaller airplays (that was a discussion among fans back then)
She was very loved by American radio stations and also had a huge fan base at that time.
