Hi Kris!
Functionally speaking it would seem more rational for sure. I'm not convinced results would be better though. Among people who bought The Fame, a lot went on to buy The Fame Monster, so in the same way that The Fame units were sold only by its songs, most people who bought TFM did so because they wanted the new songs. Even people who hadn't bought TF previously got supposedly convinced by a single from TFM since it is the ones which were promoted by then.
It is impossible to tell exactly which singles generated which sale, what we can hope for in this specific case is that both allocations off-set each others!
Digital Sales = ~14 M (as per the song's Wikipedia page, opening and Commercial performance sessions)
Spotify = 207,2 M
YouTube views = 500 M
What are the numbers for Apple Music and another streaming services? What are the conversion rates? And the numbers for ringtones, what are the sources and conversion rates? Can you please detail the 20,6 M CSPC number?
And why I Gotta Feeling, a song that sold more (IFPI reported 13 million in 2009 and 2010; it sold at least another 1.8 M in the US alone from 2011 onwards, putting it at a probable 16 M figure worldwide), accumulated more Spotify plays (220 M) and has only 160 M less YouTube views (which in terms of equivalent sales shouldn't represent an impressive gap) has 3 M less CSPC?
Is the difference due to ringtones? Or due to other streaming services? Again: what are the conversion rates (for audio and video streaming and ringtones)?
What am I missing?
Thanks.
Hi RobinsonMS!
The conversion rate for Audio streams is Spotify * 212/132. It is then converted into Equivalent Album Sales with a 1/1500 ratio. Video streams are only YouTube, then they are weigthed on par with albums with a ratio of 1/11750. Ringtones and downloads are combined and weighted as 0,15 albums.
The CSPC indicator combines everything, including the impact a single had on its parent album. PF lead over IGF there is because it powered much more sales of The Fame than IGF of The E.N.D.!
Ok, so it's not about which record sold more, it's an index created by you to measure something I don't understand (no criticism intended, it's on me because I didn't take the time to read the full article)?
I ask it because your CSPC numbers have been used as a source in the Best Selling Singles of All Time's Wikipedia page, and some figures don't seem to conform with reality, eg Poker Face outselling IGF. Now I understand why.
Thanks again.
Hey, would like to know what kinda method you used to calculate this
Joanne has 5 official certificates and all of them are counting shippments or streaming data. For instance, joanne in the uk has a gold certificate(100k) which counts shippments too, and you say she sold 105k pure sales in there, and we all know shippments are what the label sends to the stores, so how can you say she sold 105k pure sales in the uk when the BPI said that she sold 100k pure sales + shippments?
Also joanne was like out of the most important itunes charts in only 2 months after its release. Joanne left the mediatraffic charts with 900k SPS in less than 2 months.
So what are those numbers based on? what kind of method do you use?
Hi Rob!
The BPI certifies records when they reach some criterias, sales aren't blocked there though! Joanne has over 130k sold to date as per the OCC. It was on 16k units from streams when it broke 100k units combined and they were accounting for roughly 30% of its sales per week by then. The next 30k are estimated on under 20k sales and over 10k streams. This puts the album on 102/104k to date, rounded up to 105k with copies remaining on shelves!
As for mediatraffic, you will find various articles on our website explaining why their figures are massively inaccurate! This one may provide you several answers!
Hi MJD, just noticed that you got Gaga's ASIA's album sales lower than Taylor's when Gaga's BTW & TF alone sold 2.95M compared with Taylor's 4 biggest album at 2.1M based from your analysis.
Hi Franz!
For some reason, the country totals of Japan and Asia were doubled on Taylor's article! It is now fixed (it doesn't change her figures, it was only a typo made while copying data into that page).
Hey! I feel like you under estimated Alejandro's sales, that song what huge in Europe. 5.6m is big of course but it felt way bigger than that...
Hi Nicolas!
Among the 7 big singles from The Fame, 4 of them were also big in Asia, fueling their global sales. There is 3 of them which sold poorly in Asia though - Alejandro, LoveGame and Paparazzi. Alejandro is also the lowest seller of all in ringtone format, mostly because it came at the end of the era. Both elements together must be why as someone from occidental countries we may feel its sales are lower in comparison to the others!
Hey, I have a question, did Telephone outsell the single Problem by Ariana in digital sales?
Hey, I rode the artistry article and my question is: the 121 million sales indicated are her total singles or that’s including albums too?
121 million is only the digital singles.
Lady Gaga's Sales
Studio Albums: 27.2 milliom
Physical Singles: 1.42 million
Digital Singles: 121 million
EP's, Remixes, Dvd's and other records: 2 million
